Sujet: Invitation to Earth Charter Youth Dialogue with the Elders Forum on Intergenerational Partnership for Sustainability in Nigeria
Envoyé: Jun 4th, 2009 - 03:59:42

Dear Elders, Women and youth,

More than anyone else, we, the Youth, face unprecedented challenges as a result of global climate change. We also share the responsibility of addressing it. As a group, we are key moral stake-holders in the international processes treating the most important challenge of our generation: climate change. As it is our future, we will be disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change. Therefore our presence at these negotiations serves to remind the world of the necessity to tackle the climate crisis in a strong and effective way and to do so in an inclusive and equitable manner. It is critical for present and future leaders to collaborate on finding solutions and we have and will now, and continually, make our voices heard and participate in the Local, national and international processes that aim to cope with and stop dangerous climate change.

In the past, youth have already been important actors of the discussion on climate change and have extensively been represented and contributing to the UNFCCC and other negotiations. They have gathered some experience over the last years of being an active group of stake-holder at the Conference of the Parties and other meetings conveyed in the framework of the UNFCCC like UN CSD. Youth have had a consolidated participation to the processes, working effectively as a group and building mechanisms to better cooperate with the UNFCCC secretariat.

Where are the Nigerian Youths in these negotiations?

Chapter 23 of Agenda 21 states that “One of the fundamental prerequisites for the achievement of sustainable development is broad public participation in decision-making“. and The Earth Charter 2000 state that " “Provide all, especially children and youth, with educational opportunities that empower them to contribute actively to Sustainable development.”

Young people, who constitute the majority of the Nigeria's population, are an important force and partner in the field of National and global Interdependence. It follows, therefore, that youths are social actors who should be recognized as having a role to play in development and who are capable of carrying out projects and programmes in the field of sustainable development.

As Part of the Earth Charter Youth Special Project, Earth Charter Youth Initiative Nigeria is inviting you to its
