Third Ceremony of the Goodwill Ambassador Programme
Today, Wednesday, 2 March 2005, Mr. Peter D. Sutherlands has been awarded to
become the third Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Industrial Development
Organization (UNIDO). The program of UNIDO Goodwill Ambassadors as outlined by
the Director General of UNIDO Mr. Carlos Magarinos is not searching for
celebrities as this is the case with other UN organizations. Instead the
Goodwill Ambassadors are being selected due to their experience in private sector
and international trade as well as geographic distribution.
In this sense, past fall UNIDO has already selected Sir Ronald Grierson of the
UK and Mr. Mamadou Mansour Cama of Senegal. Both have gained experience in the
private sector.
Mr. Cama who is Senegalese has been a renowned businessman in the mining
industry as well as real estate and water distribution. He has contributed as
founding member to the foundation of Senegal's National Confederation of
Employers.
Sir Ronald Grierson's long career includes the posts of Vice-Chairman of the
General Electric Company from 1968 to 1996 and serving on the Board of
companies such as Chrysler Corporation, R. J. Nabisco, W. R. Grace & Co. and
British Aircraft Corporation.
Joining Sir Ronald Grierson from Europe, Mr. Peter D. Sutherland, Irish of
nationality, who has received the honors today, is currently Chairman of
British Petroleum Amoco and serving on the Boards of Investor AB,
Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc. His list
of awards received is rather long and impressive.
Having written a number of articles Mr. Sutherland mainly stands for
globalization combined with free trade, the idea that multinational companies,
FDI and trade liberalization companies give developing countries the
opportunity to increase their incomes and prosperity for their people.
Eventually trade and investments are the keys to development.
By becoming UNIDO Goodwill Ambassador Mr. Sutherland, as well as the others,
will take up the responsibility to raise awareness of the strong links between
poverty allevation aspects of economic growth, private sector development and
participation in international trade.
Additionally, to the three already awarded UNIDO Goodwill Ambassadors Mr. Long
Yongtu of China and Mr. Jorge Alberto Blanco Villegas will fulfill the
commitment of UNIDO for geographic distribution of Goodwill Ambassadors.
As UNIDO has committed itself primarily to the 3Es of sustainable development -
Economy, Environment and Employment - the challenges the new Goodwill
Ambassadors face are certainly also connected to these principles. In the end,
some voices have expressed the concerns that international trade and
multi-national companies are difficult to combine when looking into options of
helping the very poor in developing countries.
Keeping this in mind, it might also be interesting to look into the outcomes of
the MDG Review process (MDG +5) as well as the International Year of
Microcredit. Eventually, these concepts might be an interesting aspect for
integrating them into the work of the Goodwill Ambassador as it will certainly
be the case.
