  Hi friends,
Thank you for subscription. While waiting for our peers, you can join with this discussion if you want. It's about the petition against Bonsai kitten makers that you must have received from Varun (India). This is among my Vietnamese friends in another e-group so-called Environment and More.
I'm pasting it here for your interest.
Cheers,
Romi

Dear All,

FOR ANYONE WHO HAS ANY RESPECT FOR ANIMALS A site that we were able to shut last year has returned. We are trying to shut it down again! A man in New York breeds and sells kittens that are called BONSAI CATS. That
would sound cute, if it wasn't kittens, days old, that were squeezed into tiny bottles after being given a tranquiliser and then stay there, for the rest of their lives, so that they can be put on a mantelpiece and be poked and laughed at. The cats are fed through a straw and their faces struggle to reach up the neck of the bottle where there is a tiny airhole. They are treated like absolute shit. The skeleton of the kitten will take on the form of the bottle as the kitten grows. The cats never get the opportunity to move apart from the first few days they are alive with their mother. These 'ornaments' are sold cheaply and used as souvenirs. They are the latest trends in New York , China, Indonesia and New Zealand. If your still not convinced PLEASE LOOK ON http://www.bonsaikitten.com/bkgallery.html . Please help to stop this sickness.
Spare a thought for them today. This petition needs 1000 names, so please put your one name on it!

Dear Romi & friends

I have read your FW message, taken a good look in the link provided and made a tour around the world on the Internet to better understand cat status (sorry to do this, the way I do it is not to argue with you all but because I have ever been a biologist). I know that information I give here may criticize the article that hundreds people are trying to do to stop the activation of that website.

Before going further I would love to ask you what will we do with the number of 1000 names of people? How can we shut down the website permanently as we are in the IT time and they can use Free Web Hosting to post their website again and again? Finally, are domestic cat's status and dog's status are alike? If so, we do not need to discuss how to stop this website, just let it be, as many countries including VN are eating dog meat. If not, take it for consideration.

I also know that cat is a pest's natural enemy and it is very useful to VN at the moment (you may know it and I do not need to explain). Cats are as nice pests as dogs at households and they are cuddled by girls as well.

So now, please see the following information. Remember that information here is for domestic cats & dogs only not saying anything about wildlife.

Overpopulation - Unwanted Pets – a Worldwide Tragedy
http://www.ifaw.org/ifaw/general/default.aspx?oid=137649

You get some idea of the scale and risk of the overpopulation problem if you work out how many animals can be born from just one female cat and her offspring. One cat can have five kittens three times a year – these kittens reach maturity, have kittens of their own and so on. In this way, half a million cats can be born in a little more than seven years! One dog, her puppies and their offspring can produce more than 60,000 puppies in six years! .....(see the above link)

More information in this Site
http://www.ifaw.org/ifaw/general/default.aspx?oid=121247
Please spay or neuter your pet!
1 female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in just 7 years!
Pet overpopulation is a huge problem in many countries. For example, in the United States alone, every year millions of healthy cats are euthanized in shelters simply because there aren't enough homes. Help prevent the unwanted litters by spaying or neutering your pets

So, what is our action? As I understand from these data we need to spay or neuter our pets otherwise donate them to Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese restaurants.

I am sorry for your buddies, domestic cats & dogs. If you (domestic cats & dogs) are wild dogs and wild cats, your fates will be different.

Well, you can decide to support the petition or not. Trung has looked at the issue with pure scientific and conservationist perspectives.

My response is simple: I love cats and I hate people do stupid things with cat like that moron. If you hate cats, you just ignore the message. Period!

Cheers,

TLN

It is unjust, Nguyen

I will discuss 2 points here (loving and over-population)

What I am saying is the fair process, no matter who you (animals) are. If we do not make fair to animal (kill this because of hating it keep this because of loving it), how can we make our society justice? Just because one likes this but s/he doesn't like the other.
Do you like dogs, a loyal symbol? Yes/no. Do you eat dog's meat? Your answer is.....?. Do you like pigeon, a symbol of peace and happyness? Yes/no. Do you eat it? Your answer is....? and so on.

Just take example of loving pets, you know, the Avian flu epidemic H5N1 has been expanding in VN and becoming pan-epidemic. Authorities in HN issued a Decision to confiscate and kill about 2000 precious birds. No one did a test to see whether these birds were infected by H5N1 virus or not but whenever they saw birds or chickens then they sentenced them to death? Hanoian, they love their pets but they had to leave them away. What is the reason here? Did they aware the threats?

Another example of loving animals but different from the one above. Anyone heard Rhesus macaque (khỉ vàng) bred too fast in Cat Tien National Park and it then was so dominant in the habitat that the Long-tailed macaque (khỉ đuôi dài), an indigenous species, was scared of them. This is a consequence of loving Rhesus macaque to release them from the north & central habitats to the south ones (if any one, who understands about ecology and bio-geography will know the reason). Thuc, a member of Eand, worked for Cat Tien NP before will tell you more about this if you want to know.

Moreover, an over-population of a species will be a threat to the other populations. If you know population control and management programs? when the number of individuals of a population of a species is over its habitat containing ability. So, it is time for you to take action to keep the population down if you don't want to have an extinction of populations of other species. Correct? VN does not have over population of wildlife but US, Australia, India, South Africa, etc have this and they have to establish patrol teams with modern equipment even helicopters to hunt down individuals of over-populations of species.

So, the thing that I want to say here is "loving is sometimes killing". Think it carefully. I want to do sth but I can't guys. I just have a suggestion for those who want to do it. See the following

PS: To all - The way you pass the message around to ask people to fill their names in is too slow and less effective. It's better to write a message to ask everyone in the forum if they agree to put their names in the list. That is the quickest way if you want your lovely kitties to be protected otherwise your efforts are in vain

Dear A.Trung and all,

Thanks for the discussion. Here are some humble thoughts to share, in responding to A.Trung's questions and comments re Petition against Bonsai kitten makers:

1. Petition:
Although I am not so optimistic about the effectiveness of petitions, I believe they are still strong to some extent, especially in creating a widely-known campaign for or against something/someone. The more supporters to a petition, the more pressure/impacts it can put upon the authority/the public. Not surprisingly, it is one of the public communication strategies.
The target of 1000 signatures might be a modest number, but it is an attainable rapid goal. The possible actions after accomplishing the set goal can be:
- Send a condemnation letter to those sickly 'businessmen', showing at least 1000 people have unanimously protested against their 'initiative' (in opposition to the list of appraisals shown in the so-called 'guestbook' page)
- Cc the letter or write an official one to any people of authority and conservation organizations, appealing for their actions against this maniac art-commerce or whatever they want to call.
- Write steel-worded articles, make interviews with some famous people...
You may laugh at my innocence (am I ?) but besides the public's force, I personally anticipate 'heroes/heroines' will appear to shut the site down forever, and further to ban this "born-sh*te initiative" (words used by a friend of mine). They can be IT hackers, policy makers, national IT administrators etc.
Btw I doubt of the word "free" (at its purest sense) in this modern world, including the cyber world. Please watch out, there is a freedom in regulation!

2. Passing message:
Agree! It's much faster if one person asks a group of friends whether they agree to put their names in. But I just wonder if they are really aware of the issue when they don't read the information and pass the information around by themselves. This could be done if there are 2 successive steps of asking: ask to collect names of supporters in the group, and then next ask the group to circulate the petition among their friends. In order to do so 'the starter' or someone needs time and frequent Internet access to gather the info. (Not yet considering the responsiveness and the different levels of interest in the issue of the group's members)

3. Let it be or not?
This kind of email petition does not depend on culture or any macro things, it's really up to you, as an individual if you support the petition and want to voice (further take action) together with other people sharing the same views with you. I can't accept that nasty idea so I don't let it be.
I personally consider domestic cat's and dog's statuses are alike. In their short life, they can experience some or all of these following stages (accidentally all start with 'being'): being lovable pets, being neglected/relinquished/abandoned, being sold, being eaten... And now being disgustingly 'played.'
A.Trung, I understand you did not discuss about neglect or not, but rather wanted to focus on the effectiveness. However, I am not a biologist and actually had no time to carefully consider every side before responding the call and passing the info.

4. Overpop. of pets:
Thanks for digging up the information. I was not aware of this fact before browsing through the recommended articles. I was once amazed to see a gang of >10 very fat cats in Singapore but I did not imagine this pet could be so... prolific. Correct me if I'm wrong that this overpop. quite differs from the overpop. in nature. Anyway, something over is always not good.
Our action/Solution? "As I understand from the data, we need to spay and neuter our pets," not to do food-trade. Honestly, though I don't fancy kittens and puppies, I'm against eating dog/cat meat. Not moral or anything but simply I got sick of thinking about the execution... I am a half-vegan - still eat milk and fish btw.

5. Sometimes loving is killing:
It's true but I don't believe human even the humanists can resist loving/feeling favourable to something and of course someone/some ones ;-)

That is all for now! Sorry if I'm not able to follow this discussion due to my tight schedule...

Cheerio,

Romi

P.S. To A.Trung: You are so creative to add "theo" into the verse: Toi da tu`, sao bat no tu`
