Name: Tara Education Association
Website: http://taraea.wordpress.com/
Description:
96% of all Indian children between the ages of 6 and 14 are now enrolled in schools. 20% of these children drop out by the age of 15. 70% of Grade IV students are unable to read at Grade I levels. rnrnWhat this means is even when every child in the country is enrolled in a school, she still won’t receive the quality education he deserves.rnrnTara Education Association was created to enhance the quality of rural primary education. In the midst of all the other groups addressing the same challenges, what makes us special is not only what we think should be done but also who we think should do it.rnrnThe key to our approach is “activating communities”. It is not TEA but the communities we empower that bring about the changes in their children’s education. Our inclusive approach guarantees change that is meaningful and sustainable.rnrnWe work to address the obstacles faced by the four primary stakeholders in rural education- students, teachers, parents and school management.rnrnOur workshops are created for the student who is 1 roll number in a class of 75, who has no outlets for creative self-expression and who has been pushed towards rote learning from the age of 6. These workshops focus on experience-based learning and allow each child to express herself through art, music, dance and performance.rn rnTeachers and school management struggling with limited resources and few opportunities to update their skill set come together to learn new skills and share strategies at TEA’s teacher conferences conducted by our team of education experts.rnrnOur community platforms allow parents to engage in dialogue with the school. For those who have never really seen the point of an education that doesn’t equip their children for real life, this is an opportunity to suggest ways to extend the generic syllabus to include concepts of everyday importance.rnrnFor urban youth, educationists and people like you and me, TEA provides a structure through which we can use our unique talents to make a lasting contribution to rural development.
