Youth In Activism.

Written by: Aremu Olakanmi John.

According to UNESCO, youth is known to be from age of 15 and 24 years, but to my personal perspective I believe that: “Youth is the state or period of being young, that is young start from the day one is born till one believes that one is not more youth”. According to my personal perspective, youth can be seen as the time when one believes one cannot perform some actions one used to perform when one is between the ages of 5 to 35 years that is youth limitation can start form the age of 5 and 35. But, as at 2000, 1.061 billion is believed to be the population of the world’s youth population. Globally, youth represents 18 per cent of the world population (the figure representing 518 million young women and 543 million young men between 15 and 24 years of age).

Activism is a process of adopting or rejecting a policy through physical or mental strength of action. Youth needs to engage in activism for proper development. It is believed that activism makes a policy and its development to be perfected. Activism is very essential in development because it creates way to the right path and sometime to the wrong part. Youth needs to engage in activism both at home and elsewhere to stop some act of exploitations such as Child trafficking, Discrimination of any form, Intimidation, Right abuse, etc that is, some of the challenges affecting the young people such as child exploitation, discrimination of any form, intimidation, etc can be stopped through activism. Activism nowadays can be carried out on different thing (human right, child right, woman’s right, youth development, youth right, government policies, etc.) and in difference ways such as:

· Public campaign: This can be done through exhibitions (e.g. music, cooed, rally, convene, convention, etc

· Electronic media channel: This can be carried through radio e.g. cooed, Television cooed, Internet, etc

· Printed materials: This can be seen as a way of adopting a policy vigorously which may be express through written document which may be perceived directly or indirectly by the appropriate authority or way of vigour to reject a policy which may be express through written document e.g. petition, article, awareness, handbill, graffiti, protest card, etc.

If you have a deep examination at these ways of carrying out activism, one will see and conclude that they are all associated with literature. So I will say that, literature and activism cannot be separated. That is, activisms are carried out literarily.

Some of the renowned activists of the world are: Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Professor Wole Soyinka of Nigeria, Chief Gani fawehinmi (SAN) Of Nigeria, Late, Dr. Nkrumah Of Ghana, Martins Luther King, Late Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, etc. These aforementioned renowned activist of the world carried or carries out activism through: cooed, rally, etc but it should be noted that there are some renowned activist of the world also, but in which they carry or carried out activism through Music, Drama, Film, Article, etc. For example, Bob Marley (Rasta Activist). Yvonne (chaka chaka), a female musician can be seen as an example of activist carrying out activism through music because of some of his music tried and express some act of dissatisfaction with the way women are maltreated by their husband and in the society generally. Idris Abdulkadiri, a Nigerian musician tries to engage in activist through one of his popular music titled “Nigeria Jaga-jaga”.

Although, activist does face severe problems and punishments in the society from the hand of the government such as exile, house arrest, detention, etc especially in some countries, which I believe is not so in the advanced countries of the world like USA, Canada, France, UK, etc in which activist are given a great recognition in the society. It should be noted that for global development to be perfected, there must be vigorous adoption or rejection of policies. The funniest part of it is that, when youth tries to vigour about a policy in Africa (at home or elsewhere), the people consider such youth to be proud, rude, disrespectful/ arrogant, etc in which it should not be perceived this way meanwhile, policies can be perfected when there are some act of activism.

To infer, I believe that if a youth wishes to be developed or if youths are really looking for global development, they should engage in activism towards development of these things (global and youth development). It is part of my believe that, the government, the youth development organisations, United Nations organisation as well as its agents should give a good recognition to youth activism because given activism recognition will hasten global development and perfect policies.
