NICKELODEON TV SPECIAL ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING - LOOKING FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS KIDS
NICK NEWS WITH LINDA ELLERBEE is a news program for kids that airs on Nickelodeon, a U.S. cable channel. Our series takes headline news stories and explains them to middle school and high school students. Also, our program gives kids an opportunity to discuss the issues that are important to them.
We are producing a NICK NEWS special about global warming and how it affects kids - not just here in the United States but across the globe. As part of my research, I am looking to speak with kids from all over the world who care about global warming and have seen the effects of climate change in their communities.
NICK NEWS features kids between the ages of 13 and 16. My priority is to speak with outgoing, articulate kids who fit our age range and are concerned about global warming or climate change. Unfortunately, I'm not a polyglot. Any student who is interested in speaking with me should be fluent or proficient in English.
I'm willing to speak with any student that you recommend regardless of where they live. However, I would prefer to speak with students who live in areas where global warming has already caused changes in climate, water levels, etc.
With regards to the process, once a parent or guardian has given his or her permission, I call each student at a time that is convenient for him or her (normally after school) and I conduct a brief phone interview. I normally speak to between 25 and 40 kids for each special. From that group, we select 4 or 5 kids to interview on camera for our program.
If it's possible, I would prefer to touch base with the kids via email before scheduling a phone interview. (Of course, a parent or guardian should give his or her consent first!) I'm asking each student who is interested in speaking with me to answer the following questions in an email. My email address is christine (at) nicknews.com, and please include "NICK NEWS -GLOBAL WARMING" in the subject line.
1) How old are you?
2) Where do you live? Is it an urban area, a suburb, or a rural area?
3) What is your favorite class and why?
4) Why is global warming such a serious problem?
5) Has global warming affected your community? What changes have you noticed?
6) What is your biggest concern about global warming?
7) What are you doing to address global warming?
8) When is the best time to reach you and your parents/guardians?
Unfortunately, I am working under a tight deadline. If you have any students to recommend, please let me know as soon as possible. I have included some information about NICK NEWS below. If you have any questions, email is the best way to reach me. My email address is christine (at) nicknews.com. Thank you very much for your time and assistance, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Best regards,
Christine Bachas
