Hi Everybody
Welcome to the Stockholm Conference listserv (though JO beat me to it). This listserv has been set-up to allow you guys to introduce yourselves pre-conference (and get JO the bios he needs) as well as to help everyone keep in touch post-conference.
The City of Stockholm and ICLEI are keen to have youth involvement, thus they have asked me to be a youth mentor of sorts. I, along with JO, coordinated the youth summit that was held in parallel to the latest climate negotiations that took place in Montreal this past winter. (Both JO and I are Canadian). I have attached the declaration that we presented to world governments for your reading pleasure
. (this declaration will also be circulated to the conference participants)
A little background info
Programme
The Conference official opens at 11:30am on Monday, however before that there is a 2h slot 9-11h for all the youth to together, chat, have fun and generally ward off any Monday morning sleepiness. (If you would like us to cover anything in particular, please email me). We will also touch basis daily between 14h-14h30.
Objectives
Three main ones: learn, network and possibly constructively influencing
1. On learning I propose that we identify a few people to cover each session (there will be many in parallel) and report back to the group (via this listserv and the daily meetings). This will give everyone a good overview of what happened at the conference as well as give everyone some material to use should you want to follow-up with your mayor post-conference (see #3).
For an example of what I mean check out what the kids at the Commission on Sustainable Development (a UN meeting that took place these past two weeks on energy and climate change) at www.youthcaucus.net/csd14/statements.
2. Networking
.
I dont think this one requires much explanation. Meet, chat, exchange, strategize, take over the world and save the climate its the same at most youth events I assume.
To get us started on the right foot I propose that anyones that in Stockholm on Saturday night meet up for a quick non-climate drink. Lets say 9:30pm at the Conference hotel lobby well find a pub near the hotel (of course those who know Stockholm better are free to suggest an alternative!) (RSVPing to me would also be nice). I encourage you to do the same on Sunday night but JO and I wont be able to make it as we will be busy freaking out.
My pic and bio are on www.beyondkyoto.org/aboutus.en.html (along with JOs paper clip).
3. Constructive influence
This is a conference of the willing so I think our role here is to support the positive steps that local governments are already taking and encourage them to go further. We will not develop a youth declaration, however I have 5 mins in the opening plenary to flag that you guys are here and 10 mins in the closing plenary to report on your views of the conference, so think about what you would like to say (like do you support the youth declaration, etc).
Do you homework find out if your mayor is in attendance and go up and introduce yourself. See if your mayor is part of the Cities for Climate Protection http://www.iclei-europe.org/index.php?id=ccpeurope. If your mayor doesnt come, you may consider requesting a meeting with him or her after the conference to generally enlighten him/her about the wonders of climate mitigation (this is where the workshop summaries might be handy).
Spreading the word
If I can get my act together in time I will be blogging on www.itsgettinghotinhere.org (the north American youth climate activist blogging site though were always looking to expand the range). You can send me things to post or links if you blog in your own language on a different site I will also put everything up on the www.beyondkyoto.org site which I generally need to update
)
Final logistics
To post on this listserv just send the email to Stockholm (at) groups.takingitglobal.org
If you belong to takingitglobal.org you can also see a history of all the messages posted, documents and names of whose on the list at http://groups.takingitglobal.org/Stockholm (it is also very easy to register to use the site)
I will be offline until tomorrow evening, but you can always reach me on my Swiss cell +41 76 531 8228.
Cant wait to meet you all (and see some of you again!)
Cheers
Claire Stockwell
