NACA partners National Human Rights Commission to stop stigmtisation
The National Agency for the Control of AIDs (NACA) is to partner with
the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in its campaign against
HIV stigmatisation.Prof. Babatunde Oshotimehin, NACAs Director-General,
made this known in Abuja when he paid an advocacy visit to the Executive
Secretary of NHRC, Mrs Kehinde Ajoni.
He said partnership between NACA and other agencies would help in addressing
the problem.Analysing how the rights of individuals, especially those
living with HIV were being violated, Oshotimehin frowned at organisations
and institutions that insists on their employees being tested for HIV before
meeting their requests.
Oshotimehin said: "Last week my colleague drew my attention to a publication
about a private university."The university insisted that all its graduates
must undergo HIV test before receiving their certificates, describing
the action as a violation of human rights.
The NACA director-general said some banks in the country had also insisted
that their potential employees must be tested for HIV before offering them
employment.
Oshotimehin said the way to address the issue of test and status seeking,
was for each person to be convinced that it was not a compulsory task but
rather a willing heart."Knowing your status is a life changing event.
You must convince them and allow them to make up their minds and let
them know that it is their right not to collect the results after the
test, he said.
He added that NACA had submitted a bill on individual rights to the National
Assembly for passage into law.Responding, Ajoni assured NACA of the
commissions support in the quest to stop stigmatisation as well as
promotion and protection of human rights.
According to her, the commission focuses on health because it it a vital
aspect of life. She also frowned at banks that deprived their female employees
of their rights of reproduction at their early married life.According to
Ajoni, the issue of HIV test, like other sicknesses such as diabetes, should
be at ones volition.
Ajoni, who encouraged NACA to forward all matters relating to human rights
violation to the commission, said it had also filed an Anti Discrimination
Bill at the National Assembly.
"The commission has submitted an Anti Discrimination Bill before the National
Assembly, hopefully before the end of the year, it will be passed into law,
Ajoni said. She said the commission had assigned desk officers in the various
ministries and parastatal agencies to report issues relating to human rights
violation to it.
