Sujet: WORLD SOLAR PROGRAMME (1996-2005), the success story.
Envoyé: Jan 4th, 2006 - 13:03:35

It's hot and the sun is shinning brightly in Lagos today as I bring you the sucess story. As the quest for new and renewable sources of energy continue to increase, here is a write-up dedicated to the parties that has contributed to the success recorded by the World Solar Programme.
As 2005 just rolled away, some school of thoughts may argue that the World Solar Programme has not achieved much of its objectives. Whether this group is right or wrong can be simply judged by the evidence on ground.
This programme which was designed to run from 1996-2005 to offer a fresh approach to tackling energy needs around the world has indeed placed smiles on the faces of many especially those living in developing countries of the tropics.
In 2003, eight years after the inception of this programme, at the Johannesburg Summit, it was reiterated that energy issues is at the very core of the development agenda. As conventional patterns of energy production and consumption based on fossil fuels are unsustainable, energy efficiency measures as well as the utilization of renewable energies are at the heart of sustainable development. Furthermore, as more than 2 million people, the majority of them living in rural and suburban areas in developing world, have no access to modern forms of energy services, the increased use of locally available renewable energy sources and in particular solar energy has among others contributed to poverty reduction.
The success story therefore is that developing countries who adopted this initiative and participated in the programme has nothing to regret. Most of these nations now boast of an eco-efficient alternative to routine sources of unsustainable energy supply. Many of the success achieved by the World Solar Programme will be accorded to initiatives and events which complied to the plan of the programme including: 'WSSD Johannesburg 2003'and the 'Johannesburg Energy Coalition', 'EU Energy Initiative', 'International Conference on Renewable Energies Bonn 2004', amongst other earlier meetings.
Credits must go to UNEP, UNDP, UNIDO, UNESCO, UNDESA, GEF, EU and other institutions for their efforts in achieving the main part of the objectives of the programme in the areas of policy making, project planning and implementation, as well as in information systems. Thanks to the GEF, UNDESA, UNDP, UNEP and UNIDO for supporting renewable energy projects and programmes. Again, it's 'thumbs up' for the UNDP and the World Bank for instituting the Global Village Energy Partnership that aims to creating and maintaining effective mechanism for addressing energy-poverty needs and serves as a marketplace for information and best practices on the effective development and implementation of energy-poverty projects/programmes.
Finally, I say Go! UNEP Go! for launching the Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development, and the Global Forum on sustainable Energy amongst other great ideas.
