Sujet: Lineup week 2
Envoyé: Apr 30th, 2007 - 05:22:12

  Hey folks,

Apologies that I have been a bit delayed this week, have been doing uni
work all weekend and am still not finished, so there’s my excuse and on we
go…

As I said last week, the main focus of our campaigning this term will be
on Control Arms. If you are not already in the Facebook group, you can
join at:

http://warwick.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2265585701

The next meeting will be on Thursday at 6pm in MR6.

Anyways, this stuff this week:

1) Control Arms Meeting: Thursday 6pm: MR6
2) Central for Alternative Technology Voluntary Opportunity
3) *****"A Sea-Change for Climate Change? The Economic, Political,
Economic Consequences of Global Warming” Event from the Centre for the
Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation. Tuesday 6pm******
4) Join hundreds of students at a week-long training and action camp
against Trident – speak to Ella on e.sprung (at) warwick.ac.uk for more
details!

Something which you could do this week which will raise money for
charities without you having to sacrifice any of your own money or put in
much effort:

Basically - Microsoft is donating money, through whatever they make with
their ads on msn to several charity organizations. Read the website below.
Basically all you have to do is put on your messenger nickname smth
like*Oxfam, or *unicef and so on so forth. On your nickname it will appear
as "I'M" rather than the code.

1) CONTROL ARMS MEETING: THURSDAY 6PM: MR6

From the Facebook group: Mark says it so much better than me!:

People's & planet's Arms Trade and Ethical Investment Campaign 2007/2008

Campaigning to:
• raise awareness amongst students about the nature and impact of the arms
trade;
• support charities who work to help those who have suffered as a result
of the international arms trade;
• work towards a ethical policy for Warwick university with regards to its
investments and the corporations it interacts with and invites onto our
campus.

Lobbying and protesting to:
• end government subsidies and support for arms exports;
• end exports to oppressive regimes;
• end exports to countries involved in an armed conflict or region of
tension;
• end exports to countries whose social welfare is threatened by military
spending;
• support measures, both in the UK and internationally, which will
regulate and reduce the arms trade and lead to its eventual end.

We’ll be campaigning on a local level and linking up nationally with all
the other university campaigns and groups working on these issues.

The international arms trade and the extent of their activities aren’t
just an unfortunate fact of life – they’re a product of government support
and we want this support to end and for the government to fulfil its
ethical obligation to regulate the arms trade.

If you care about the issues then get involved and please invite anyone
you know who may be interested to join!

2) Centre for Alternative Technology Volunteer Opportunity

Since sending the e-mail last week, I have contacted Rich Hawkins about a
suitable time for him to come to Warwick. Am waiting to hear back from
him.

If you have mislaid that e-mail, here it is again. Let me know if you are
interested.

Hi Andrew,

My name is Richard Hawkins and I'm currently working with the Centre for
Alternative Technology.

Tim Helweg-Larsen has a few contact in your Go Green network and advised
me to contact you regarding CAT recruiting some of your very talented
members to assist in our political/media campaign to promote our new UK
energy strategy ('Redefining Energy').

We're looking for 3-4 volunteer coordinators in various areas (media,
politics, grassroots) that could dedicate a decent chunk of time (2 weeks
- 3months!) to a very worthy cause; that would also happen to look great
on a CV! (There is no salary for a good, but long-winded reason that I can
explain another time.)

The launch of the strategy is taking place at our 3rd Annual Sustainable
Science Symposium which is growing in size every day! We currently have
invitations signed by the Welsh representative of every party going out to
prominent research bodies & speakers.

2 days after the symposium (7th-8th July) we are also presenting the
strategy at the AGM of the All Party Parliamentary Climate Change Group in
Westminster.

I've put together a campaign that involves a lot more than this and would
love to come and make a short presentation to your group on CAT, the
strategy and the positions available. We'd like to do it sooner rather
than later as we're keen to sort the "keystones" that will enable us to
mobilise & organise our huge resource base (8,000 dedicated and very well
connected members etc.).

What do you think?

3) Sea-Change for Climate Change? The Economic, Political, Economic
Consequences of Global Warming” Event from the Centre for the Study of
Globalisation and Regionalisation. Tuesday 6pm

I wanted to draw your attention to the event on climate change that the
Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation is holding next
Tuesday from 6.00pm: "A Sea-Change for Climate Change? The Economic,
Political, Economic Consequences of Global Warming". The invited speakers
- Jean-Francois Mouhot, Birmingham University; Peter Newell, CSGR -
Warwick; Andrew Sentance, CSGR - Warwick; Benedict Southworth, World
Development Movement - will bring to the debate their
perspectives from the economic, political, ethical, and historical angle.

You can have more information at:
http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/csgr/activitiesnews/workshops/2007ws/c
limate_change/

The event is open, and it would be great if you could circulate these
among your members.

4) Join hundreds of students at a week-long training and action camp
against Trident – speak to Ella on e.sprung (at) warwick.ac.uk for more
details!

Are you angry about billions of pounds being wasted on nuclear weapons
that ultimately make our world a more dangerous place to live in? Fancy a
week camping in some beautiful Scottish woods? Then come to the Faslane
365 Students Summer Blockade and Strident Camp!

Students from around the country will come together for a week of
discussion, training, fun and action against Trident on 28 June-3 July. If
this sounds like something you'd like to be involved in, check out the
website at http://faslane365students.org/

GET INVOLVED IN THE STUDENT ANTI-TRIDENT CAMP
- The organisers are trying to make the process of organisation as
inclusive as possible and would welcome your help.
* help co-ordinate people coming from your area as a regional
rep
* Mobilise others and get an affinity group together
* Join one of the planning teams and work on events, promotions
or logistics
* Or simply register you want to come as an individual
Check out http://faslane365students.org/ for more info

Add your details on this forum thread, and co-ordinate with others who do
to sort this out:
