THIS WEEK:
1) Discussion about next yearâs exec structure: MONDAY 6pm MR2
To ensure our continued success as a society, we meet every year before
our elections to discuss the changes which can be made to our exec
structure. Anyone is welcome to attend, whether or not you intend to stand
to be on the exec next year, although I do strongly recommend that if you
do intend to stand for an exec position that you attend this meeting. You
will find out more about what being on the exec involves and it will give
us an idea of how many people want to stand.
2) CONTROL ARMS STALL: Monday â from Mark
On Monday I'm running a stall to try and get signatures for the petition
to shut DESO (the government department that provides free marketing for
the international arms industry at the tax payer's expense). I have class
in the afternoon though so I need some help. If anyone is willing to give
some time, my e-mail address is m.a.carrigan (at) warwick.ac.uk.
There's more information about DESO here:
http://www.caat.org.uk/publications/government/desobriefing0106.php
3) âBattleâs Poison Cloudâ a talk by Dr Madeline Sharp MBE: Tuesday
6pm S0.11
On Tuesday at 6pm in S0.11 Iâm playing Battleâs Poisoned Cloud: itâs
an award winning documentary film about chemical weapons in Vietnam
introduced by guest speaker Dr Madeline Sharp, MBE (Honarary Secretary of
Medical and Scientific Aid for Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) with questions
afterwards.
Dr Sharp really knows her stuff so it would be great to see lots of you
there. If youâve not already been invited on Facebook go to:
http://warwick.facebook.com/event.php?eid=2245165044ref=mf
4) Control Arms Protest in London â from Mark
On Wednesday, there's a protest in London outside DESO before we're going
to the treasury to hand in the petition. I'll be going down so if anyone
wants to join me get in touch ( m.a.carrigan (at) warwick.ac.uk ).
5) Go Green Evaluation Meeting: Wednesday 6pm. Room TBA
After a stunning success last week, we need to discuss what was good and
what needs to be improved to make things even better for next year! This
is a very important so it would be great if as many people could come who
were either involved in the organisation, or those that attended.
6) Society Awards: Wednesday from 8pm. The Cooler
In case you didnât know, we have stood for the Best Society Award! The
awards ceremony will take place in Wednesday in the Cooler from 8pm â
absolutely free! If you want food there is veg or chicken curry, or beef
or veg lasagne available for 3. You will need to get there early to get
food.
7) Meeting to discuss Primark action: Thursday MR2 6pm
8) Primark Action: Saturday in Birmingham
Next weekend in Birmingham, members of People and Planet throughout the
region are holding an action against Primark in Birmingham (details
below). On Thursday, we will be having a meeting to discuss this. For
details, contact Beth on e.f.taylor (at) warwick.ac.uk
This year we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the
trans-atlantic slave-trade. Yet the clothes we wear are produced by people
who are forced to work too hard for too little, at times in conditions
that risk their lives. Will you allow this to continue?UK High Street
retailers exacerbate the problem, by demanding cheaper clothes delivered
more quickly. We will be holding a demonstration on SATURDAY 10TH MARCH
outside, inside and all around PRIMARK in BIRMINGHAM.So come along and get
involved. We need people to:*Run a stall outside*Chain themselves together
with a HUGE sack of cotton (in the making)*Go round the store hanging
information hooks on clothes hangers*getting naked and demanding Primark
to clothe you ethically hehe (entirely optional - see Ben for details
:oP)*Demanding a meeting with mangement.A decade ago continuous action was
successful in getting the GAP to clean up their act with regards to
Sweatshops and child labour. Now we are targetting PRIMARK, so get your
campaigning boots on!

9) Union South Rebuild Focus Group: Environment and Accessibility
As part of the plans for the Union South Rebuild, Brian Duggan has
established 12 working groups, one of which is for the Environment and
Accessibility issues. This group will feed into the overall Steering Group
on the rebuild. Paddy Kent, the Environmental campaigns Officer 2006-07,
and his successor for 2007-08 Asen Geshakov, attended the first meeting.
The terms of reference are:
- Determine appropriate measures to minimise environmental impact.
- Examine recycling potential during the build and fit process,
- Work with engineers to find cost-effective ways to maximise energy
conservation.
- Ensure the build process and subsequent operations meet the Union's
Environmental and Zero Waste Policies.
The group meets on the last Monday of each month (meaning the next meeting
in term time is 30th April!)
If you would like to get involved with this working group over the rest of
this year and into 2007-08 as well, particularly if you have knowledge of
environmental building design, then please contact Paddy Kent as
paddy.kent (at) gmail.com by Wednesday 7th March to get involved.
E-ACTIONS!!!!
