There is something about poverty that smells like death.
Dead deams dropping off the heart, live leaves in the dry season and rotting around the feet;
impulses smothered too long in the fetid air of underground caves.
People can be slaveships in shoes. - Zora Neale Hurtson

For the first time, this generation has all the resources necessary to put an end extreme poverty in our lifetime. Dear friends, family, aquaintances... [& whoever else you might be], It's another year since the last time I asked you for sponsorship for the World Vision 40 Hour Famine. It's a cause that I am passionate about, because I have heard the first hand stories of the work that the money does, and because I have researched and educated myself on the issues of extreme poverty and the immense global injustice that is unfortunately a part of our world today. For those of you who might be reading this that I have been out of touch with lately, I'm studying international relations and development studies at uni (at UNSW) and have further been stricken in my first year background courses of how interconnected we are here in the developed world with the developing world, and how these interconnections right back in history have caused the global divide that the world is experiencing.. One half living in complete material luxury to the point of waste, and the other with their basic human rights of shelter, clean water, food, etc not being met every single day. We are all interconnected to our counterparts who struggle to survive every day simply because of the massive indistribution of wealth globally. I believe it is our responsible as wealthy citizens of the world.. And having access to the internet proves that we really are in the very wealthy minority, to do what we can to make a difference in people's lives, through our time, or our money.. or ideally, both. It gives me so much hope when I read the second quote that I started this email off with - the fact that it is absoultely possible to eradicate extreme poverty by 2025 with the resources we have, spending a far smaller amount than is spent on defence every year. A real opportunity for us is to make a one off donation to World Vision's 40 Hour Famine drive. I'll be fasting for 40 hours in late august again this year and leading a 40 Hour Famine group for college in doing so. I'm really excited about where the money raised is going - to Laos (one of our close neighbours, near cambodia and vietnam, and one of the poorest countries in asia). Volunteering at the World Vision Global Leadership Conventions this year, I met a young lady called sirasouk (im not sure of the spelling) who is from laos and has grown up in the desperate poverty there. She is now the coordinator of the entire world vision child sponsorship program in Laos, and it was amazing to watch her whole face light up as she talked about the transformation she has seen in the work that is done there, and also to see her sadness at some of the stories she told. In Laos, there is a lack of land for agriculture because of landmines leftover from the vietnam war, which havent been cleared yet. In addition to floods and droughts there can be severe food shortages. Malnutrition leads to the occurane of diseases like malaria and a lack of access to medication furthers this problem. World Vision works with the underlying issues in the community to bring about sustainable changes in people's lives to create better futures. The calculation is that for every $40 raised, the money can be used in such a way that 8 children can be fed for a month. If I've convinced you to spare anything from $2 upwards, you can donate online at www.40hourfamine.com and enter the book number: 27095220-3 so I am notified and it goes towards my target (I'm hoping to raise $1,000). Otherwise you could send me a cheque made out to World Vision to: Jemma WilliamsNew CollegeAnzac Pde UNSWKENGSINGTON 2052 If you have any questions or want to chat with me further about the famine or any other activities I am involved in (Vision generation, Make Poverty History, Zero Seven roadtrip) please email me back or ring me on 0431460853. Thankyou for reading the whole email, and I hope to catch up with you soon. Jemma p.s - to those of you who are already doing the famine - good luck! Thanks for reading anyway :)MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY We need your voice! Become a Stirrer: http://stir.org.au/stir/BecomeAStirrer.aspx?topicID=311
