Sujet: Call From United Nations Commission
Envoyé: Jan 12th, 2007 - 13:11:24

Dear Friends, There are two important events taking place at the UN Headquarters in the next couple of months that are relevant to the issue of migration, and I want to encourage you to contribute. Lack of employment opportunities is one of the biggest reasons for youth migration, and employment is the theme of Commission for Social Development. The Commission on the Status of Women will focus on the situation of girls, and empowerment of young girls can go a long way to reduce forced migration and human trafficking. Please read more below. The United Nations Commission for Social Development will take place on February 7-16, and the theme this year is “Promoting full employment and decent work for all." Governments are looking for case studies and good practices on employment contributing to poverty eradication, and the NGO Committee for Social Development has developed a survey that aims to capture the great initiatives out
there. Young people constitute more than half of the world’s unemployed, but there are still not enough employment initiatives out there that address the situation of young people. Also, the value of non-formal education is still not sufficiently recognized. Do you have a good case study of a youth employment initiative in your community/country? Please fill out the survey below and send it to csocdsurvey (at) gmail.com (the deadline is rolling, but the sooner the better): English: http://events.takingitglobal.org/11413/docs/641/SurveyEnglishTranslati on.doc The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women takes place on February 26 – March 9, and the theme is “The elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl child”. UNICEF, the Working Group on Girls and the Global Youth Action Network have developed a child-friendly version of an Expert Group Meeting report that will feed into the Commission. The idea
is to encourage young girls that are affected by discrimination and violence to give their response and feedback to governments and civil society before and during the Commission. The report and more information are available in several languages here: http://www.unicef.org/voy/takeaction/takeaction_3295.html. Please send this information to other networks as you see appropriate. Best regards, Vidar Ekehaug Program Manager Global Youth Action Network 211 East 43rd Street. Suite 905.
