Media Skills: Making a Difference
The BBC World Service Trust (WST) is running an HIV/AIDS mass
media campaign in Nigeria, addressing young people between 15 and 24,
encouraging them to adopt behaviours that would prevent them from HIV infection,
and to reduce stigma. The campaign is using entertainment techniques to
attract a wide youth audience on radio, TV and film. The project is working
closely with the Society for Family Health, and is liaising with NACA, GHAIN
and other agencies.
The WST has a production office in Abuja, where a team of
editors, producers, presenters and support staff are putting together the
media output for broadcast on Nigerian stations. The radio programmes that
are currently broadcast on more than 50 Nigerian radio stations are
called FLAVA (in English) and Ya Take Ne? (in Hausa).
UNAIDS and UNICEF are supporting the above project with two activities:
1. A media-skills workshop for 30 selected candidates from
across Nigeria to acquire basic knowledge on media and
communication techniques.
2. A limited number of three-month attachments, where young
Nigerians living with HIV/AIDS are working with the BBC WST in Abuja for
three months, acquiring media skills which they can put to good
use in their home organisations after the attachment finishes.
This is a call for applications for both the Media Skills workshop and
the Radio Production Attachments. You can download the application form
