Join E-Consultation on Youth Participation in Implementing ICPD!

From September 17 to October 14, 2008, UNFPA will conduct an online E-Consultation with young people to learn about their experiences with participating in implementing the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The E-Consultation is part of UNFPA’s review on progress made 15 years after ICPD came into effect.

The ICPD, which was held in Cairo in 1994, articulated a bold new vision about the relationship between population, development and well-being. 179 countries agreed that empowering women and meeting people's needs for education and health, including reproductive health, are necessary for both individual advancement and balanced social development. Concrete goals of the ICPD centred on providing universal education; reducing infant, child and maternal mortality; and ensuring universal access by 2015 to reproductive health care, including family planning, assisted childbirth and prevention of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS. For more information please see http://www.unfpa.org/icpd/summary.cfm

Every fifth year UNFPA assesses progress made in the commitments made and in 2008/09 UNFPA will head the third assessment process, taking stock of progress that has been made so far in achieving the ICPD goals.

As young people play a crucial role in any nation’s prospects for development, this E-Consultation will assess youth participation in and awareness of relevant ICPD activities, and solicit recommendations for increased youth participation and impact in ICPD implementation. The purpose of the E-Consultation is thus to identify opportunities to include young people and young people’s issues in the ICPD (at) 15 assessment and to provide a forum for young activists and organizations to connect, strategize, and collaborate.

The E-Consultation will take place over four weeks and each week will be dedicated to a major theme and include 3-4 discussion questions for participants response.

Weekly themes are:
- Past and Current Youth Participation and Awareness
- Learning from Experiences, Applying Best Practices
- How Young People have Organized their Own Participation
- Moving Forward: Suggestions for Increased Youth Involvement and Impact

The E-Consultation provides an excellent opportunity for young people to contribute their experiences and ideas to the ICPD (at) 15 assessment process and to ICPD implementation more broadly. Please join us and spread the word to all young people who may be interested in participating!
