  Dear Colleagues,

Thank very much for this opportunity given young people to be part of issues concerning them and the well being of their communities.

I shall like to give a general appraisal of the situation in Cameroon which I believe holds for most countries of the south with centralized presidential system where the president has much powers. That is the case in Cameroon.

1. Do you think governments are good in using technology to make public information and services available for their citizens?

Technologically the system in Cameroon is still very primitive. Government has a strong grip on information and officials would even maintain sealed lips when contacted for information. Most government departments are still to be computerized.

Government propaganda is mainly through the National Radio which does not cover most parts of the country especially those in the rural communities where poverty does not even allow the owning and maintaining of a radio set. Things are made worst by the absence of electricity for power supply.

2. How can governments use technology to have a closer dialogue with young people about public policies and services?

Considering that many young people are in a situation of inadequacy in information, a situation that the Cameroon government appreciates so as to continue exploiting them, it would be better for government to open up opportunities for youth representation through a national Youth Council. This does not exist in Cameroon.

Governments should make it as a point of priority to support young people to implement their own projects and share experiences with others at local, regional and national levels.

Thanks
