  Hello Everyone,

I am very happy to be in this forum. My name is Ella, i am a Nigerian and i really apologise for latching on to this group this late, but then, better late than never i will say. I hope my views will be looked upon with equanimity and i will also learn a lot from this fellowship of like minds. These are my answers:

1. Do you feel that the public services offered in your country reflect the needs and wishes of young people? What is your experience in using public services?

Well, as is well known, Nigeria, being the most populous black nation on earth, is still a third world country. As in all third world countries, efficient public services, is still but a Utopian dream. I am not saying that the government is not doing anything, its just that it is not enough. The question of youths and young people is still a bit premature because, we have so many problems facing us and our nationhood, that special emphasis on youths by the government is still being fought for. The public services provided in my country, is mostly aimed at the poor and not necessarily the youths. Yes, government make promises to young people in the bid to keep them calm and all that, but the truth is that the government feels its has other more pressing issues than youth friendly public services or policies.

The beautiful thing is that, despite all these, the Nigerian youth is striving to survive and flourish against all odds. They can be found everywhere, working from dawn to dusk in other to make ends meet and making it. Unemployment is not as high as it should be given the conditions they are living under. I am very proud of them and their industry.

2. What can governments do to improve their public services and make sure they reflect the needs of their citizens?

Well, to me, the government does talk a lot and always fails to listen. Policies are made that read wonderfully well on paper, but has no implementary value. The wishes of the people can be heard even in the air. The government is made up of people and not buildings or machines, they know exactly what the wishes of the people are, but it may not favor them. I believe they have every necessary tool to be more citizen friendly. I dont have any suggestion or advice left in my repertoire! All is ask is that they do what is right for many and not few. The issue of corruption is endemic and needs to be flushed out.

As citizens, we also have a role to play. If we reject bad service everywhere, they will sit up. The funds needed to beef up our public services are being steadily syphoned, and all we do is fold our hands. I believe we deserve the kind of leadership we get because, the leaders are products of our society!

Best Regards!
