  Hi all,

I am Bala from Fantsuam Foundation in Northern Nigeria.

1. Do you feel the views of young people are sufficiently included in designing public policy? What are the barriers to participation?

The answer here is quite obvious, our views are not considered, when one looks at some of the policies one wonders if the people that made them ever were youths themselves. In my culture, the older person is always to be listened to because
they are meant to be wiser and as the saying goes,'what the old man can see sitting down, the young man cant even when he climbs the
tree", these are the kind of beliefs that serve as barriers when it comes to accepting the youths inputs in decision making.

The reality is that our generation are beginning to have access to all sorts of information sources and are getting more knowledgeable about real issues than many of the older generation. it just a shame that these young people with brilliant ideas will not get heard because some people dont want it heard that someone younger came up with an idea/ policy that actually worked better than what was there before.

2. What steps can governments take to facilitate greater youth participation?

One way to go will be to allow youths access to the design process of the policies. Youths should be allowed to review and amend policies before they are implemented, there will need to be a process to ensure that their suggestions are considered fairly.
