  Dear Colleagues,

I am please to take part in this discussion. My Name is Jamils Richard Achunji Anguaseh, Director of Program of Global Welfare Association (GLOWA),
a youth led organization in Cameroon.

May 5-11: Voices and Choices - Designing Public Policy with Youth

1. Do you feel the views of young people are sufficiently included in designing public policy? What are the barriers to participation?

The views of young people in Cameroon are hardly taken into consideration during policy formulation. Adult have a monopoly of knowledge. When attempts are made to consul young people, only those that are close to the people in power and speak their language are consulted. Many reasons can be advanced for this trend.

- The Cameroonian youth is so disorganized
- Youths have very limited opportunities to develop appropriate skills in leadership, lobbying and advocacy that will permit them to claim rights to participation.
- There is no National Youth Council in Cameroon
- Tradition and customs consider young people as semi humans.
- Social dialogue is absent due to no communication channels as youths are not organized.

2. What steps can governments take to facilitate greater youth participation?

- National Youths Councils should be institutionalized just like way as National Parliaments. Then National Youths Councils can collaborate at International level.
- The Global Youth Coalition could lead an international advocacy with The United Nations to press national governments to make National Youth Council an arm of governments.
- In countries of the Global South like Cameroon where parents have limited capacities, family life education in positive parenting should be instituted and/or enforced. Young people will hardly be good leader when they do not have the opportunity to practice leadership within their homes.
