Training on 7th Research Framework Programme of the European
Union (18 Fellowships)

Deadline: The deadline for receipt of applications is 26th January
2007.

Background: CPN-YAS-PRD (shortened name CPN-Africa) is an EU-funded
project whose aim is to attract Young African Scientists (YAS) to
participate in EU-funded research projects in Poverty Related Diseases (PRD)
through the establishment of a functional and dynamic Contact Points
Network (CPN) that will provide information and assistance to YAS. Key
components of the CPN (in Africa) will be Regional Contact Points (RCPs)
and Local Contact Points (LCPs). PRD are the major killer diseases of
HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis but also include the neglected diseases
(trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, etc).

Purpose of Training: CPN-Africa is now calling for applications for a
two weeks training course on "The 7th Research Framework Programme of
the European Union" targeted at potential LCP partners in the network.
The training will be offered to individuals, preferably engaged in PRD
research in estab¬lished institutions and demonstrating a strong interest
in becoming LCPs. Functions of the LCPs will be identifying, informing
and consulting YAS in their countries and/or the region on EU-funding
opportuni¬ties for research projects in PRD as well as the collection of
data on YAS and research institutions. After the training session, some
participants will be invited to join the EU-funded network of LCPs.

Dates and Venue: The training will take place from 19th March to 1st
April 2007 in Ndola, Zambia and will be hosted by the Tropical Diseases
Research Centre. An official opening conference is planned with the
Zambian Minister for Health and representatives from the European
Commission.

Trainers of the training will be representatives of European National
Contact Points (NCPs) from Austria, Estonia, Germany and The Netherlands
in co-operation with the following African Regional Contact Points
(RCPs): African Centre for Clinical Trials (ACCT) of Kenya, Fobang
Foundation (FF) of Cameroon, and the Tropical Diseases Research Centre (TDRC)
of Zambia.

Applicants should fulfil the following conditions:

- Hold at minimum a bachelors degree in medical field, veterinary,
biology or natural sciences
- Be engaged in PRD research in an established research or academic
institution
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills (fluent in
English)
- Have research management experience
- Have familiarity with software products (Microsoft Office)
- Have good presentation, networking and organisational skills

In addition, the applicant must be employed or strongly supported by an
academic or research institu¬tion or any other organisation with an
interest in PRD research, which is willing to offer to host and sup¬port
an LCP office equipped with computer, telephone, fax, internet etc.

Applications & Fellowships: CPN-Africa will provide 18 fellowships that
will cover the participation costs, travel expenses, accommodation and
a modest subsistence allowance. Applications from interested persons
should be submitted electronically and should include the following
documents:

(i) a cover or motivational letter justifying why the applicant should
be offered a fellowship,
(ii) a current CV
(iii) a completed application form which can be downloaded from the
project website at http://www.cpn-africa.eu
