I agree we should discuss infrastructural development issues relating to youth. To me the most important thing in the Niger- Delta is PEACE. I know how it feels to be in a situation of uncertainty. You don't know when the next attack will happen and where. So I believe we should not build a wooden house on fire. Let us address the conflict and see a permanent end to hostilities, kidnappings etc.
This can be achieved through dialogue then we can go on to have a multi-sectoral arragement that will draw up a sustainable development plan for the region. This plan will now address the problems of the children born and yet to be born, youth and the elderly.
Dishonesty and greed are the greatest challenges that the region is facing, there is no problem with resources, there are lots of talents. So let us not develop to destroy.
The conflict is having one dimension but mind MEAND keeps planning new strategies that will make their presence felt to don't underestimate them. Pursue peace and then development.
May Peace Prevail in the Niger -Delta
May Peace Prevail in Africa
May Peace Prevail on Earth

Dear Colleagues,
There were quite few responses to yesterday's discussion. I hope we will be
able to really get the contributions coming in today. Please see the message
tread at www.groups.takingitglobal.org/NDYConference.
Yesterday, I got a chance to address the sub-committee on youth, women and
community development at the Presidential Technical Committee on the
Niger-delta. I identified a number of priority investment areas related to youth
development and informed the committee about this e-conference. The outcomes is
therefore being expected by the committee at the end of this process.
Today's discussion will focus on critical infrastructure needs in the
Niger-delta region and the implications for youth development. If we need
electricity, what impact will it have on youth development? if we need good
roads and an effective transportation system, what impact will it have on youth
development? As in the previous two days, it will be nice to highlight best
practices related infrastructure development in other developing countries and
how the strength of the youth was utilised.
Let's keep the contributions coming in!

This conference holding from October 13-18, 2008 is an avenue to discuss the
development situation in the Niger-delta, with emphasis on the implications for
youth development, to prioritise development investment needs of the youth
highlighting quick wins as well as long term development issues, and to collate
the views of young people from the Niger-delta, Nigeria and the international
community on the development of the region. The final report of the conference
will be collated and submitted to the Niger-delta Steering Committee in late
October, 2008.
