Sujet: Re: [NDYConference] Day 3: Priority Infrastructure development
Envoyé: Oct 15th, 2008 - 05:56:00

Much as we need good roads and electricity, I suggest we lay emphasis on infrastructures will directly improve the quality of life for the youth. We should build more schools or rather ensure the ones we have are well maintained and also build more skill acquisition centres. If the region has well educated and skilled youth, they will appreciate the other infracstructural services more because they can pay for other services like hospital, electrical bills etc.

Thank you

Dear Colleagues,

There were quite few responses to yesterday's discussion. I hope we will be
able to really get the contributions coming in today. Please see the message
tread at www.groups.takingitglobal.org/NDYConference.

Yesterday, I got a chance to address the sub-committee on youth, women and
community development at the Presidential Technical Committee on the
Niger-delta. I identified a number of priority investment areas related to youth
development and informed the committee about this e-conference. The outcomes is
therefore being expected by the committee at the end of this process.

Today's discussion will focus on critical infrastructure needs in the
Niger-delta region and the implications for youth development. If we need
electricity, what impact will it have on youth development? if we need good
roads and an effective transportation system, what impact will it have on youth
development? As in the previous two days, it will be nice to highlight best
practices related infrastructure development in other developing countries and
how the strength of the youth was utilised.

Let's keep the contributions coming in!

This conference holding from October 13-18, 2008 is an avenue to discuss the
development situation in the Niger-delta, with emphasis on the implications for
youth development, to prioritise development investment needs of the youth
highlighting quick wins as well as long term development issues, and to collate
the views of young people from the Niger-delta, Nigeria and the international
community on the development of the region. The final report of the conference
will be collated and submitted to the Niger-delta Steering Committee in late
October, 2008.
