Subject: Oxfam and the Scouts movement
Dear Activist
I thought you would be interested to know about an opportunity Oxfam has
been given to work with the Scouting movement in their centenary year,
which some group members may wish to be involved in. This will be a chance
to talk to thousands of young people about development issues - people who
could be the leaders and activists of the future.
Oxfam will be running workshops and an exhibition at the Scouts' World
Jamboree on July 26 - August 8. This is a celebration of the Scouting
movement's hundredth anniversary, which will be held at Hylands Park,
Chelmsford, Essex, and will involve approximately 40,000 scouts from around
the world, aged 14 - 17. We will use the issue of the link between climate
change and poverty to promote the idea of Global Citizenship with this
audience. We will need helpers throughout this period to run the sessions,
and to train and oversee the volunteer scout leaders who will be helping us
to run our activities. This is a great chance to learn about promoting
Global Citizenship at a practical level, to develop skills at working with
young people, and to help Oxfam learn more about promoting development
issues with this audience. Plus you get to take part in a unique event!
You can find out more about this event at http://eng.thejamboree.org/
If you might be interested in helping at all or part of this event, then I
would love to hear from you - ideally early next week (I will need to
ensure that participants are registered, and have had a criminal record
check to work with children - this is straightforward but takes a while to
process). Ideally, a commitment to be there for a whole week would be good,
but we'd certainly consider less. (I know this probably rules out lots of
people, but the logistics and costs of attending means that it will be very
difficult for people to come just for a day or two).
Camping isn't obligatory, for those needing their creature comforts -
accomodation is available in a nearby college, which would be paid for
(note that those not staying on site don't get access to the bar!).
Lastly, if you have contact with Scouts or Guides at a local level, I would
be really interested to hear about it. Oxfam is currently looking at how we
can work in the longer-term with the Scouting movement, and it would be
great to learn from existing activity.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
