Description :
Mentorship Programme

“Docendo discimus” (we learn by teaching)

Mentorship – is defined as a formal relationship between a student and a work-role model that provides support and encouragement to a student. The minimum time commitment on each party's behalf is to consist of intermittent e-mail communication for a period of one year.

Job Shadow – the second stage of the mentorship strategy is a mentor job shadow, which allows students to see the day-to-day duties of the mentor first hand, and gain an understanding of his/her department. During the course of the job shadow, which typically lasts one regular workday, students only observe and do no participate in any work.

Mentorship Strategy
Mentorship programs have shown that a youth's one-on-one relationship with a supportive adult can lead to a number of positive outcomes. In fact studies show that a student with a mentor is 52% less likely to miss school, 46% less likely to start using drugs, 37% less likely to lie to parents, 32% less likely to use physical violence, and 27% less likely to use alcohol. The most significant statistic is a student with a mentor has an 82% chance of graduating high-school, compared to 42% if in a single parent home, or 67% if from a two parent household.

Mentorship Process Flow
Student – Although the Bud e-mail component of the mentorship program is the first contact between volunteers and high-school partnership students, a student self-assessment is actually the beginning of the MFMY mentorship program. The self-assessments are used to match students with potential mentors who share similar competencies and skill sets within MFMY. Students can learn about positions in fields that interest them, as well as read information about MFMH employees in those target areas. Students who are interested in specific areas of technology or telecommunications have an opportunity to apply for a mentor through the MFMY network.

Mentor – Prior to the initial connection to a student, a self-selection process is required of volunteers. The coordinator will assess a Mentor’s competencies and skill sets and match them with a student that shares their strengths.

Screening of Students and Volunteers
Selection of students and volunteers for potential mentorship involves the MFMH coordinator and an educator/ career counselor within the high-school who has personal knowledge of the student and can assess the student's level of commitment to a program such as this.

Mentorship Support Program
Support of students, volunteers and educators involved in the MFMH mentorship program is vital to the success of the program. Access to reference material that reinforces expectations of each of the parties, as well as access to the MFMH coordinator will enhance the experience for all involved.
A comprehensive information package will be distributed prior to the initial meeting of students and mentors. These will be developed for each party to outline the program, provide a calendar of upcoming events, feature frequently asked questions, offer other reference materials, and promote the MFMH website.
