Our country - Georgia is located at the border of Turkey, where outbreak of very serious infectious disease- Avian flue was officially announced (WHO web site www.who.int). Our focus area - Guria is 90 km apart from the actual border. Several cases haves been detected in Georgia, but officially it is expected to be prevalent in two months. This is very serious infectious disease that is transmitted form birds and because of not following hygiene norms. Children are especially at greatest risk, because of their immature immune system and the character of the disease, that effects mostly children and old people. Most children also lack skills to follow hygiene norms.
Government is disseminating information about the infection and the ways of its prevention, but this is hard to be understandable for children. There is no special educational curriculum adopted for children. Rural areas are at greater risk, as there is no electricity to watch TV, read newspaper and there is big gap in information. Guria region is at huge risk, as it is very close to the epidemic zone- to Turkey and poultry farming is the main business here. Children are having contact with chicken and other birds as they help with farming. There are no health cabinets that would serve the children to provide adequate information.
