QUESTIONS FOR WEEK FOUR: Stephen Matenga, Zimbabwe
1. Are there specific practices or approaches you think would increase collaboration among young people, development agencies, and national governments?
nothing for the youth without the youth. the best approach is consultative process ensuring that the young people are informed and consulted at all levels and aspects of national, regional and international structures and systems
2. How do you think we in general can ensure increased youth participation and impact in national and local development programmes? Why or why not?
i think young people are marginalised in decision making processes at national level. they are only engaged as passengers hence they hit back by doing the opposite deliberately. hence they become a problem to society yet if we can win their support through involving them in national decision making process they associate with the process and are more likely to make meaningful contributions to society
3. How can we ensure the invitation and subsequent participation of young people in the national and regional assessment processes related to core ICPD efforts (such as family planning, reproductive health, sexually transmitted disease and gender equality)?
the youth should be trained in ICPD to build their capacity to impliment or evaluate it. such training, education and awareness can take variuos creative formats including use of the radio, tv, internet, newspapers, workshops, advert material such as t-shirts, posters, banners, etc. they can also initiate cultural and learning exchanges to other countries to learn the best practices, they can also be engaged in discussions, dialogue and debate as well as through social networking platforms such as parties, dinners, ets
