Que 1. Based on your own experience and views on family planning, reproductive
health, sexually transmitted diseases, gender equality and community
participation in development, which issues need to be given more attention in
your country?
Nigeria my country is presently working on all the areas mentioned.
When you talk of family planning, it applied to most families
especially at the grassroots level and a I work in the field of
disability, a lot of education seminars etc takes place in order to
reduce many mouths to feed since our people are very poor indded.
Basically, sexually tranmitted diseases receives enough attention from
the government and even trado-medicine, to see that youths are
restrained from leading promiscuous life. There is spiritaul angle to
it to as the church are stepping up campaign where they believe,
abortion and even condoms are not needed if the youths are well
trained and brought up at the family level. In the gender equality,
Nigeria my country is beginnning to appreciate women and their numbers
keep increasing in the government and they are being given more
responsibilities but in our disability community, gender
representation is non-existent and this is an area we are seriously
campaigning to overcome. Frankly speaking, we are battling more with
community participation than any other area as at the present because
we have been sidelined, neglected and refers to as second class
citizens in our own country! Because of this we are agitating for
consitution amendment, electoral reforms, etc and this currently
enjoys the parliaments support.People with disabilities and their
various organisations have joined Women Organisations ans well as the
Civil Sovieties to see that we enjoy better life through reforms in
our coutry.
2. Do you have any suggestions of additional issues relevant to youth
which would be important to add to the development (ICPD) agenda?
In Nigeria, we have been attending various capacity building,
conferences and seminars to campaign for the neglected youths withn
disability. For example, we are taking health sector as too
cumbersome, since health is expensive and have been asking the
government to make it less-expensive or totally free. In Sports sector
and social welfare, we canvass for support for our people to obtain
loans to set up business and to lead normal life because of poverty
many of us faced. The poverty allevaition programme of the government
did not reach us well likewise in the sports where others are making
millions and our people are not included. The watchword is exclusion
which are battling to see that we are well educated trained and useful
not only to ourselves but also our family and the nation at large.
That was why we gave our support to MDGs camapign.
3. Do you know of development projects addressing issues of poverty
reduction, family planning, reproductive health and gender equality
(i.e., related to ICPD) which were implemented with a high degree of
youth participation and
recognition? Were they successful why or why not?
The Federal, States as well as Local Government put in place various
programmes to combat poverty, there are agencies such as National
Poverty Eradication/Alleviation Programme (NAPEP), The National
Directorate of Employment (NDE)etc. The youths are always carried
along with the programme. There are skills acquistion training being
always organised for youths. In the area of health, sexually
transmitted diseases and family planning, we have so many
organisations like Society for Family Health (SHF), Parenthood Society
etc that are assisting the youths while a host of churches and Mosques
are also campaign for "Fidelty" and "Youths without Blemish and
Uncompromising" vis their Singles/Married programmes.
Most of these programmes including training on STD, HIV/AIDS
prevention are doing fairly well and people with disabilities are also
invited to participate. However, because these programmes need
fundings to oraginsed properly, we in the disability community strive
to access funds to bring the programmes to our people periodically but
accessing to funding is always difficult. Thus, when we attend these
programmes we are often charged to pay some fees and as many people
with disabilities that are interested always get discouraged because
they cannot afford to pay the fees in all these programmes have helped
many of the youths with disabilities that have attended.
4. If you do not know of a development project related to core ICPD issues, you
might want to share an experience with a development project with youth
participation in general which you think could be used as a model for means to
ensure youth participation in implementing strategies and projects related to
family planning, reproductive health, sexually transmitted disease, and gender
equality.
We have enumerate the development projects in Question three.
Thanks!
