> QUESTIONS FOR WEEK THREE
>
> 1. Do you know of efforts among young people to coordinate their efforts
on and participation in promoting family planning, reproductive health,
addressing sexually transmitted disease and gender equality?

Yes, In Kenya, we have organised ourselves as young people into networks formed by us and
we have also joined other networks run by adults to harmonise youth adult
partnership and also identify potential and dediocated adults who have the
interest of youth at heart. Such coalitions and networks include; Youth Peer
Education Network (Y-PEER), Network for Adolescent and Youth of Africa
(NAYA), Reproductive Health Alliance, Integrated Reproductive Health
Coalition (IRHEHCO). The organisations enhances the capacity of young people
to take a driving seat in championing for their RH rights through capacity
building in peer education, advocacy and policy lobbying, gender
mainstreaming with an aim of sustaining the gains made by young people in
promoting family planning, reproductive health, addressing sexually
transmitted disease and gender equality. With the availability of goverment
policies, legislation, guidelines and strategies on family planning,
reproductive health, sexually transmitted disease and gender equality, the
is now a concentrated effort and young people are slowly beggining to take
charge of their RH issues.

> 2. In your experience, what conditions have led to the best opportunities
for young people to actively participate in activities which seek to promote
family planning, reproductive health, and gender equality and address
sexually transmitted disease? What have been the greatest barriers?
>
*Favouring factors*

- Youth-Adult partnership
- Goodwill and commitment from development partners
- supportive government documents
realisation by the government that family planning, reproductive health,
and gender equality and sexually transmitted disease are development
issues hence no sustainable development is not achievable without providing
leadership and commitment on this issues.
- Goodwill from Members of Parliament under the auspicies of Kenya
Parliamentary Network on Population
- Goodwill from members of the fourth estate (Media) under the umbrella
of Kenya Media Network on Population (KMEP)
- continued advocacy from the civil society
- Reorganisation of the youth themselves
- supportive specific government agencies eg National Coordinating Agency
for Population and Development (NCAPD), Department of Reproductive
Health-Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation.

* Greatest barriers*

- Low literacy level among the youth and population on their reproductive
health
- inadequate domestication of family planning, reproductive health, and
gender equality and sexually transmitted disease into the family
- Continued controvertion of Sexuality Education
- Inadequate resource allocation for the implementation of in line
documents by the government
- in adequate dissemination of this documents
- Poverty and prioritisation of these issues
- Competing interests especially from the civil society
- lack of accountability eg Kenya government has not accounted for Global
Fund on HIV and TB round two
- religion and culture

> 3. How have the perspectives and opinions of young people been
perceived among public and private institutions designing and implementing
development programmes, with particular attention to those on family
planning, reproductive health, sexually transmitted disease and gender
equality?
>
- A section of the society is in agreement that young people are leaders
of today but the majority still feel that the dawn of women and youth
leadership is yet to arrive. This has snailed the implementation process.
There is a commendable shift by the corporate world to focus on the
mentioned issues with urgency but much more need to be done.
- Am* convinced* that optimal health of the adolescent population of
Kenya will increase their productive capacity to contribute to the nations
development
