Name: E-Consultation on youth participation in implementing ICPD: September 17 to October 14
Categories: Education Human Rights Health
Description:
Welcome to the E-Consultation which aims to learn about young people’s experiences with participating in implementing the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The E-Consultation is organized and moderated by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) as part of its review on progress made 15 years after ICPD came into effect.
The ICPD, which was held in Cairo in 1994, articulated a bold new vision about the relationship between population, development and well-being. 179 countries agreed that empowering women and meeting people's needs for education and health, including reproductive health, are necessary for both individual advancement and balanced social development. The conference adopted a 20-year Programme of Action, which focused on individuals' needs and rights, rather than on achieving demographic targets.
Advancing gender equality, eliminating violence against women and ensuring women's ability to control their own fertility were acknowledged as cornerstones of population and development policies. Concrete goals of the ICPD centred on providing universal education; reducing infant, child and maternal mortality; and ensuring universal access by 2015 to reproductive health care, including family planning, assisted childbirth and prevention of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS. For more information please see http://www.unfpa.org/icpd/summary.cfm.
Every fifth year UNFPA assesses progress made in the commitments made and in 2008/09 UNFPA will head the third assessment process, taking stock of progress that has been made so far in achieving the ICPD goals.
As young people play a crucial role in any nation’s prospects for development, this E-Consultation will assess youth participation in and awareness of relevant ICPD activities, and solicit recommendations for increased youth participation and impact in ICPD implementation. The purpose of the E-Consultation is thus to identify opportunities to include young people and young people’s issues in the ICPD@15 assessment and to provide a forum for young activists and organizations to connect, strategize, and collaborate.
The E-Consultation will take place over 4 weeks, from September 17 until October 14 2008. Each week will be dedicated to a major theme and include 3-4 discussion questions for participant response.
Weekly themes are:
- Past and Current Youth Participation and Awareness
- Learning from Experiences, Applying Best Practices
- How Young People have Organized their Own Participation
- Moving Forward: Suggestions for Increased Youth Involvement and Impact
The E-Consultation provides an excellent opportunity for young people to contribute their experiences and ideas to the ICPD@15 assessment process and to ICPD implementation more broadly. Please join us and spread the word to all young people who may be interested in participating!
Instructions:
