  Harare Call to Action: High Level Meeting of the GlobalPOWER Women Network Africa (in collaboration with the African Union and UNAIDS) GlobalPOWER
4 June 2012
************

HARARE - We, the participants, met in Harare, Zimbabwe, from 24 to 25 May 2012 at the Inaugural High Level meeting and Launching event of the GlobalPOWER Women Network Africa (GPWN-Africa). The GPWN-Africa is a platform of elected or appointed women representatives that seek to advance the cause of women in Africa through various empowerment initiatives. The High Level meeting theme was: ‘Accelerating Action for Women Empowerment and Gender Equality in the area of HIV, Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights: Getting to Zero.’ 2. We,

2. We,

a) Acknowledge that Africa’s development continues to be impaired by sexual and reproductive health and rights challenges, including the scourge of HIV and AIDS;

b) Recognize that Gender inequality factors render women and girls more vulnerable to these conditions;

c) Note that African Leaders with support from development partners have implemented programs to address these challenges and recorded significant progress, in particular through key continental and global benchmarks, such as the Kampala Actions on Maternal, New born and Child Health and Development in Africa by 2015, the Continental Policy Framework on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and its Plan of Action “Maputo Plan of Action”, the Abuja Declaration and the Abuja Call for Accelerated Actions Towards Universal Access to HIV and AIDS, TB and Malaria Services by 2015, the MDGs health-related targets and Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for Africa Fit for Children, the Campaign for Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA), African Women’s Decade, and the Agenda for Accelerated Country Action for Women, Girls, Gender Equality and HIV.;

d) Further note that despite progress recorded, considerable ground remains to be covered if Africa’s development objectives are to be attained.
