> Dear Friends and Colleagues,
>
> It has been a busy few months for the Youth RISE network. In addition to our activities and project work, there have been a number of major internal changes at Youth RISE- we are now an independent incorporated organisation and to mark this mile-stone we have launched our new logo.

> 1. Briefing papers
>
> During Youth RISE's pre-conference in Beirut, a set of formal recommendations were developed on four separate themes that are central to the work of Youth RISE. These have now been developed into four briefing papers covering the following areas:
>
> Criminalisation and Law Enforcement
> Harm Reduction and Young People
> Participation of Young People who use Drugs
> Human Rights, Drug Policy and Young People who use Drugs
> These papers provide a basic overview of these four important issue areas that are at the core of Youth RISE's work.

> 2. ‘RISE UP! For HIV Prevention’
>
>
> Youth RISE with the support of MTV Staying Alive Foundation recently organised a community focused three-day peer education training on sexual health and harm reduction for young people who use drugs in Nigeria and Lebanon. The training was facilitated by International Working Group members Adeolu Ogunrombi (Nigeria) and Sally Shamas (Lebanon).
>
> The trainings took place in June and July and provided a great opportunity for many of the participants to learn about harm reduction and how to protect themselves from HIV. There are significant populations of young people who use drugs in both Nigeria and Lebanon and little effective drug and sexual health education, therefore these trainings are a vital tool in generating greater awareness among the community.

> 3. Overdose Awareness Day 2011
>
> Overdose Awareness Day was 31st August, and Youth RISE members globally marked the day with an online vigil to remember the people who have died as a result of drug overdose. Youth RISE members in Nepal and Lebanon were also involved in organising and participated in activities to raise awareness about drug overdose in their countries.
>
> We also developed a small brochure which aims to educate on how to recognise and prevent overdose.
>
> 4. S.I.B.A. / Youth RISE Lebanon
>
> Following the 2011 International Harm Reduction Conference in Beirut, a group of Youth RISE members supported by the networks staff members came together to create a new youth-led organisation for the region called S . I . B . A. advocating for just and humane drug policies and harm reduction services in the region.
>
> By fostering greater ties between young people in Lebanon, the organisation will build a strong advocacy voice on behalf of young people affected by drug polices, calling for improved access to harm reduction services and youth engagement in drug policy, human rights and harm reduction issues.
>
> 5. Youth RISE in North America
>
>
>
> Youth RISE has been expanding its outreach work throughout North America through working closely with a number of leading organisations in the region, TRIP! And DanceSafe on harm reduction outreach at leading music festivals in the region. Youth RISE will also be participating in the Canadian drug policy coalition and the Latin American drug policy conference alongside members from Mexico, Hungary and Norway where a number of youth-led workshops will be held. You can read more here!

> 6. Organisation membership/partnership
>

> Further details will be up on our new website shortly.

> 7. UNAIDS Inter-agency task team (IATT)
>
> The UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on HIV and Young People was created in 2001 to support an accelerated, harmonized and expanded global, regional and country-level response to increase young people's utilization of HIV prevention, treatment, and care services. Membership includes the UNAIDS Secretariat and UNAIDS co-sponsors (UNHCR, UNICEF, WHO, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, World Bank), along with a number of youth networks/associations, donors, civil society, and research institutions.
>
> The Annual Meeting of the IATT that took place on 28-29 June, 2011 in Paris, France included four youth networks: Youth RISE, AfriYAN, GYCA, and WAC. As a result of well-coordinated and united advocacy of these networks, IATT reformed it structure giving more attention to the most at-risk young people, including young people who use drugs. There are now stand-alone working groups on harm reduction and young people living with HIV/AIDS that are to implement IATT's workplans.
>
> 8. Youth reforming drug policy in Latin America

> "Children of the drug war" is a unique collection of original essays that investigates the impacts of the war on drugs on children, young people and their families. With contributions from around the world, providing different perspectives and utilizing a wide range of styles and approaches including ethnographic studies, personal accounts and interviews, the book asks fundamental questions of national and international drug control systems:
> What have been the costs to children and young people of the war on drugs?
> Is the protection of children from drugs a solid justification for current policies?
> What kinds of public fears and preconceptions exist in relation to drugs and the drug trade?
> How can children and young people be placed at the forefront of drug policies?
> "Thinking drugs" is a new website allowing you to explore where you stand on the drug policy / harm reduction debate but going through a series of argument maps. A really clever site, well worth checking it out...
