Dear GYCA members,
In one week, one of the most important meetings related to HIV in the world will
start. The UN High Level Meeting that will take place 30 years after the
beginning of the AIDS epìdemic and 10 years after the Declaration of Commitment
on HIV/AIDS. Many young activists will be participating on their national
delegations, on side events and the process in general. Our Regional Focal
Points from West Africa (Gabriel Adeyemo), South Asia (Ajay Kumar) and Southern
Africa (Mawethu Zita) will be present. Some National Focal Points will
participate as well such as Christian Bayingana from Rwanda, Mariana Iacono from
Argentina, Guffran Rostom from Mauritus and Gerardo Camacho from Bolivia. Staff
members Sydney Hushie, Reshma Pattni, Lindsay Menard-Freeman and Oceane Hooks
(intern) will be present as well.
On June 7th we will be hosting a Youth Summit in partnership with other youth
organizations and with the support of UNAIDS. The objectives of the Summit are:
1) To contextualize the HLM process and the outcome document to ensure young
people can participate effectively, 2) To create a strategy for how young
people and youth-led organizations will work to hold their governments
accountable after the HLM, including a mapping of the types of activities that
would work in different contexts and, 3) To set clear actions for young
activists to do in the short, mid and long term as follow-up to the HLM,
including ways to monitor and evaluate these actions and hold ourselves
accountable.
GYCA is co-organizing a rally and the March to End AIDS! in the morning of June
8th. More information is available here: http://www.wecanendaids.org/
There will be other side events where GYCA people will be speaking such as
Lindsay at the panel Girls, Women and HIV with Mr. Ban Ki Moon and Michelle
Bachelete, director of UN Women. Ricardo will be speaking on the Young People on
the AIDS Response with the Princess of Norway Mette-Marit and Michel Sidibe,
director of UNAIDS.
The Zero Document (the outcome document of the HLM) is still being negotiated by
countries at the UN so it's important we keep pushing our governments to be as
progressive as possible in order to make sure that youth issues are addressed on
the document in terms of prevention, treatment and human rights.
We'll be sending updates via email, Facebook and Twitter so don't forget to
follow us!
Ricardo (on behalf of the GYCA staff)
