Subject: INVITATION TO WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY 2011 CELEBRATION
Sent: May 24th, 2011 - 13:24:41

INVITATION TO WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY 2011 CELEBRATION
Sequel to the International Blood Donor Day celebrated in 1995 and World Health
Day 2000, which focused on the theme of blood safety, the first World Blood
Donor Day was held on 14 June 2004. These early initiatives and widespread
interest led to the adoption of World Health Assembly resolution WHA58.13 in
2005, establishing World Blood Donors Day (WBDD) as an annual event and calling
for broad international support.
World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is a global event celebrated annually on the 14th
day of June to thank voluntary blood donors who give blood to save others’ lives
that they don’t know or might have not met. Much more, the celebration apart
from demonstrating the true worth and values of these donors as celebrity and
models creates an avenue for mass enlightenment of the public on the teeming
need for safe blood which can only be ensured by voluntary non-remunerated blood
donation (VNRBD) system.
As part of plans to commemorate the 2011 World Blood Donor Day with the theme:
“More Blood, More Lives”, Blood Drive Initiative, Nigeria’s foremost
non-governmental organization in the transfusion science of Nigeria’s health
sector, in collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) has
