Fellow GYCAers,

When one partner in a couple is infected with HIV and the other is not,
treatment with antiretroviral drugs can dramatically lower the chances of
the infected partner passing along the disease to his or her mate, a new
evidence review finds. Patients with HIV receive a combination of drugs is
given as part of antiretroviral therapy (ART) to stop progression of the
disease.

The new review discovered that when patients with HIV are on ART, their
partners had more than a five-fold lower risk of getting the virus than in
couples without treatment. "We weren't particularly surprised having
followed this literature for awhile," said reviewer George Rutherford of
Global Health Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco.

"The magnitude of the effect was somewhat surprising, though." The review
appears in the current issue of *The Cochrane Library*, a publication of The
Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates
research in all aspects of health care. Systematic reviews draw
evidence-based conclusions about medical practice after considering both the
content and quality of existing trials on a topic.
