Subject: Attacks on Reproductive Health: Looking Forward
Dear Joya,
Last Friday President Obama signed into law the final spending bill,
as agreed to by the House and Senate, which will keep the U.S.
government funded until the fall. Thanks to your action and advocacy,
measures to completely defund Planned Parenthood and the United
Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) were defeated, and the Global Gag Rule
was not reinstated.
However, womens health still paid a high price in the negotiations:
-Global HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, and international family
planning will suffer sizeable cuts in U.S. funding
-International family planning in particular will face
disproportionate cuts, relative to other global health areas
-Domestic reproductive health funding will face cuts, and Washington,
D.C. will no longer be able to use its own local funds to pay for
abortion for low-income women
In other words, its clear the Republican House leadership used the
budget process to push its ideological agenda and attack womens
health at home and abroad. When Congress should be moving forward with
smart, cost-effective investments to reduce the unmet need for
reproductive health services, Republican House leadership prefers to
play politics with womens lives. Congress is now turning its efforts
to the fiscal year 2012 budget, and we should be prepared for these
attacks to continue.
Looking ahead
CHANGE will continue to keep you informed and join with you to tell
Congress that women are not disposable. We hope that you will continue
to take action and stand firm for womens health here in the United
States and abroad.
Thank you for your tireless support!
In solidarity,
