Subject: Africa Analysis: Science going social

  Hi GYCA,

Interesting article! I don't personally believe Twitter is going to
revolutionize Africa, but other forms of social media technology
certainly might. Just look at Luleki Sizwe, a South African LGBT
organization that used an online petition to gather 170,000 signatures
and force the South African government to meet with them and amend
policy to address "corrective rapes" of lesbians.

Africa Analysis: Science going social

Africa's mobile Internet boom could revolutionise the way scientists,
policymakers and the public interact, says Linda Nordling.

Excerpt:
Internet use in Africa is growing. Nearly one in ten Africans had
access to the Internet in 2010 — up from one in 200 ten years ago,
according to the UN's International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Most Africans access the Internet through their mobile phones. The ITU
reports that usage of the mobile Internet overtook fixed connections
in Africa in the last quarter of 2009.
