Subject: [ungass_international] Regional Consultation in LA Informal
report
Dear all
I would like to socialize with you some results on the UA Regional
Consultation held in Mexico, LA, on March (1st and 2nd). It was attended by
the nine regional AIDS networks + Youth Coalition and the regional arm of
ITPC, CIAT.
1. The consultation was targeted at six main themes:
2. Leadership and Social Commitment;
3. Sustainability;
4. Prevention;
5. Treatment and Care;
6. Stigma, discrimination, violence and equity in populations in
vulnerable situations;
7. Gender Equality, Women and Girls Agenda.
On the first day presentations were made about the regional and some
national context and the LA presented the Political Document we prepared for
the Consultation. Part of the first day was devoted for working groups with
participants being able to contribute with all groups, based on a
methodology called "Carousel"
The second day there was a session with the participation of several
Ministers of Health and UNAIDS. Civil society played a very important role
and worked together in all sessions, expressing our message all the time:
"Less word and more Actions toward 2015". It helped to bring back the
discussion about the Regional Document which was not scheduled in the
original agenda for the second day.
From our intervention, a new version of the text was presented, already
improved by the languages proposed by Redes LA and the Horizontal Technical
Cooperation Group (GCTH), representing all the National AIDS Programs.
Ultimately it was formed a small committee, with representatives of UN
agencies, governments and civil society who is responsible now for
finalizing the document containing recommendations and regional goals. LACCASO
(Alessandra Nilo) and REDLA (Ruben Pecchio) are on this committee.
Topics such as new technologies for prevention, criminalization of
transmission, innovative financing mechanisms for health and AIDS, M&E
structures with the participation of civil society were included in regional
commitments.
CS participation also helped to increase Governments' awareness about the
importance of attending the CS Hearings in NY, on April 8, so as to include
representatives of civil society in its national delegations to the AIDS
Review Meeting in June. The presence of ministers from Mexico and El
Salvador, countries on the PCB, were very important to strengthen alliances.
Well, we hope that soon we will be be socializing the final UA LA
Consultation final document. It will be great to read from you how are the
processes in the other regions.
Best regards,
Alessandra Nilo
