Subject: Introduction from WAC Youth Coordinator
To: "youthconsultation (at) worldaidscampaign.org"

Dear Colleagues

My name is Remmy Shawa, the new Global Youth Campaigns Coordinator at
the World AIDS Campaign. I have taken over from Liping Mian who was
with the WAC until December 2010. I am grateful to Natalie Siniora who
has been assisting with the youth constituency in my absence. I am
sure you have been in touch with her recently. I will take most of the
work that she was so kind to help with, like communicating to and
maintain the youth consultation group. I come from Zambia and will be
relocating to the Cape Town office much sooner than later. As a young
person, I bring to the youth constituency more than 6 years of
progressive experience in youth work related to HIV/AIDS, Gender and
Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. I started off as a
volunteer peer educator in 2004 in one of Zambia’s poor rural areas.
My early involvement in HIV and AIDS was mostly at community/grassroot
levels dealing with peer education and community mobilisation. Since I
joined the United Nations as first a Special Youth Fellow and later as
a consultant one year nine months ago, I have been exposed to the
global AIDS response, and policy environment. I am happy that all this
experience comes in handy in helping me deliver on the demands of the
youth constituency programme.

At the top of my agenda is building and strengthening country and
regional partnerships and promoting greater and meaningful involvement
of key populations of young people in all processes that we embark on
as a constituency. This includes Young People Living with HIV, Young
MSM, Young Drug Users, Young Sex Workers and Young Migrants. I
strongly believe that there are so many young people, youth networks
and organisations that are either doing a lot of work in responding to
HIV and AIDS or who are hugely affected by HIV. I hope to work with
you all in seeing how we can think  global while acting local. In a
time of financial challenges, we need to learn what works well such as
strengthening country partnerships and build on such to inform our
work globally. It is also very important to respond to local needs
using the ‘know your epidemic’ and ‘know your response’ approach; as
not one size fits all.

I am open to new ideas and lessons, so please do not even think twice
about getting in touch with me for any discussion in this regard.
Looking forward to working with you all and I am happy to be part of
such an energetic network of young people.

Best regards,
Remmy
