* IPPF Announces Fund to Commemorate David Kato *

*Work of Murdered Ugandan Activist to be Commemorated with Leadership Award*

Speaking in response to the murder of David Kato, a courageous human rights
activist who worked to promote the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals,
transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people in Uganda, IPPF Director-General Dr
Gill Greer said:

“This is a truly sad event and Africa and the world is poorer for his loss.
It’s a sad time for everyone who knew David. He was a man of great courage,
who deserves to be remembered with profound respect.”

“Even today tens of thousands of people will be persecuted because of their
sexual orientation. David Kato’s tragic death reminds us of the bravery of
the people around the world who fight against this injustice and defend
human rights for all of us. Throughout its work IPPF reaffirms the fact that
human rights apply to everyone, without exception. “

In recognition of David Cato’s life and courage, and the continued struggle
of sexual minorities around the world, IPPF, together with other partners
who are committed to eliminating violence, stigma and discrimination, plans
to establish a fund to recognise the leadership of individuals who uphold
the sexual rights of minority groups.

Ends.

IPPF is both a service provider and an advocate of sexual and reproductive
health and rights. We are a worldwide network of 151 Member Associations
