Subject: Male circumcision may reduce risk of cervical cancer
Sent: Jan 28th, 2011 - 07:15:03

Having a male partner who is circumcised reduces a woman’s chances of
infection with high-risk forms of the human papillomavirus (HPV) by
about 25 percent, according to a study among more than 1,000 Ugandan
couples published in the 17 January 2011 issue of The Lancet.

Persistent infection with high-risk HPV can cause cervical cancer in
women and anal cancers in both sexes. Previous trials found that male
circumcision reduces the risk of HPV as well as HIV infection in men.
Now an analysis of HPV data from two randomised controlled trials of
the effects of the procedure on HIV transmission to female partners
has shown for the first time that male circumcision offers women some
protection against the most dangerous forms of HPV.

The study authors and the authors of a commentary on the study
cautioned that this protection is modest, pointing to the need for
additional prevention measures such as promotion of safer sex and
greater access to HPV vaccines
