Subject: HIV patients may be at higher risk of stroke
Sent: Jan 20th, 2011 - 07:58:00

  *Check study below;*

People infected with HIV may be at significantly greater risk of suffering a
stroke than their uninfected peers, according to a new study.
[image: clearpxl]Researchers with the University of California, San Diego
said that HIV patients may be up to three times more likely to have a stroke
than people not infected with the disease.

Dr. Bruce Ovbiagele, lead researcher and a member of the American Academy of
Neurology said in a statement that while stroke hospitalizations in the
United States had decreased by 7 percent within the last decade, rates for
HIV-positive people rose 67 percent.

People with HIV also tend to have strokes on average in their 50s, which is
much younger than people not infected with the disease.

Ovbiagele and his colleagues say the findings suggest HIV treatment may be
directly related to stroke occurrence.

“Indeed, one potential explanation is the increasingly widespread use of
combination antiretroviral medications in HIV-infected people. While these
therapies have greatly increased life expectancy, they may boost the
presence of risk factors associated with stroke,” Ovbiagele said in a
statement.
“Another possibility is that longer exposure to HIV as a result of greater
survival, even at low viral load levels, may allow for the virus to increase
stroke risk,” he said.
