Fellow Advocates, this is a great and good news for me, at-least being a country man and an advocate to curb the disease.

Professionals have disclosed that the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has reduced drastically in the last two years across the country.

The executive secretary of Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr Oluyemisi Ajibawo, stated this at a press conference held recently in Abeokuta to commemorate the 2010 World AIDS Day.

He said the deadly disease had reduced by more than 25 per cent among youths with the use of safer sex practices, adding that fewer deaths were now being recorded, especially from those with access to what he described as antiretroviral therapy.

Ajibawo, who disclosed that the country had achieved the first part of goal six of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by halting and beginning to reverse the spread of HIV, said efforts must be made to ensure that the menace was nipped in the bud.

While identifying the affected people to be within the ages of 25-29, he advocated the need to further sensitise young people on the need to adopt safer behaviours.

“The recently released 2010 UNAIDS global report on the AIDS epidemic indicates that we are finally beginning to see a reverse in the spread. This is largely due to more people living longer as a result of increased access to antiretroviral therapy.

“At this juncture, I will like to state that with commitment and solidarity, the world is turning the corner on the AIDS epidemic.

We have finally reached the first part of Millennium Development Goal 6 by halting and beginning to reverse the spread of HIV and we must continue to chart new and bold path ahead,” he said.

Thanks for reading and I wish you all compliments of the season and a prosperous new year in advance.
