US State Department magazine article
Any young writer? Embrace this opportunity
All the best.
Dear fellow youth,
The Road to Rio+20 coalition is very excited to provide you with an
opportunity to make your voice heard and raise funds for your own
initiatives!
A few days ago, the US State Department contacted us, asking us to write an
article to be placed in a special edition of their magazine eJournal, on
the topic of sustainable development, targeted to high school- and
university-aged youth, printed and distributed online in 30 foreign
languages. The article should be "written in first-person by a young
sustainable development activist describing their experiences as a young
person in this field and the importance of youth involvement in Rio+20".
They also specified that: "No real preference on where the activist be
from. What we care about most is that they be able to write well and
honestly about their experiences. It also doesn't necessarily have to be
first-person, it could be a somewhat more generic "here are the benefits
and challenges of sustainable development work as a young person, etc" kind
of thing. We just want something well written and inspiring!" The article
should be approximately 600-800 words long.
I'm writing to you to encourage you to send an outline (no more than 200
words) of the article, along with a sample of previous writings, to
nicolo (at) peacechild.org, by 10:00am GMT tomorrow (Saturday). The Road to
Rio+20 Steering Group will then select 5 out of all submissions and ask its
authors to develop a full draft by the same time on Sunday, in order for us
to make a final decision on the article to be submitted, and have a final
edited version, ready to be sent to the US State Department, first thing
Monday morning.
The payment for such contribution, which might be anywhere between US$600
and US$800 ($1/ word), will be divided evenly:
- 50% going to finance our Road to Rio+20 coalition
- 50% going as a donation to the author's
organization/initiative/campaign/project
If there are any questions, please get in touch with me off list. Looking
forward to receive those submissions!
All the best,
Nicolò
