Sujet: New drug cuts HIV infection by 30% in Uganda
Envoyé: Sep 25th, 2009 - 12:42:04

Ugandan researchers have welcomed news of an experimental Aids vaccine which
reduced HIV infections by about a third in Thailand. The vaccine is made
from two older versions, and is the first to show any protection against
HIV, the virus that causes Aids, and which has killed millions worldwide
over the last three decades. Recent failures in vaccine trials had led many
scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible.
The health minister of Thailand, where the trials were conducted, called the
outcome a “very important step for developing an Aids vaccine” but experts
warned that a commercial vaccine may require more time and it may not work
in Africa, which has suffered the brunt of the epidemic.
