Please email the representatives of Latin American and Caribbean states to the Organization of American States (OAS) calling on them to protect the transgender community and to investigate violence against them. * * Today is the 7th* International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia . It is a day to remember all those who have been killed, persecuted or discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or identity. In 2010, there were 168 transgender killings in 13 Central and South American countries.1 Most of the transgender people killed were sex workers and all murders were hate crimes motivated by transphobia. It is high time that OAS commitments on human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity turned into effective protection for transgender people and other sexual minorities.
