US to dole out 65 million USD for HIV/AIDS programmes

*Updated on 8/8/2007 at 22:21 *
*The US Government will in 2007 provide an amount of 65 million USD to
support Vietnam's endeavours to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. *

US Ambassador to Vietnam Michael Marine announced the aid while visiting
first legal support office for HIV/AIDS people in Ho Chi Minh City on August
8.

The financing will be used to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in community,
provide medicines and care for HIV carriers, particularly orphans.

The legal support office was opened on January 12, 2007, with funding from
the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Staffed by peer counsellors and lawyers, the office was established by the
Centre for Consulting on Law, Policy, Health and HIV/AIDS and the Vietnam
Lawyers Association to provide legal advice, assistance and education to
people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

During his trip, the US ambassador also called at a number of HIV patients
who have been supplied with assistance by the office and other HIV/AIDS
prevention programmes in HCM City.
