Round 1: The State of Youth Employment*

Youth employment in the Philippines is not stable. We have a lot of State
Colleges and Universities and private run Universities including Technical
School run by the Government. Year after year we witness successful
graduations. But after graduation, here comes the reality that graduates are
hard up in looking for a job. There are a lot of jobs in the Philippines but
it requires special skills that were never tackled in school. Universities
for instance, Teaching courses like Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEeD),
and Banchelor of Secondary Education (BEED). We have thousand of graduates
in this area but we do not have enough school to accommodate them as
teachers.

-The only employment the Government can offer if to become a military man,
but the entrance is like "you are welcome but you are not welcome".

In some way I see a one sided kind of employment. For instance, a CEO only
hires employee who are a graduate of his own university. We have a lot of
competent graduates but they resorted to work as a 6 months contractual
sales lady in a supermarket.

What the school teaches has nothing to do with the real world. There are a
lot of opportunities to development yet graduates lack the training there
opportunities require. For example, call center industry in the Philippines
are booming, they need a good English speaker, communicator and writer. For
a 100 applicants only around 2-5 can pass the screening. So where will the
other 95 goes?

Philippines lack executive workers. We need managerial people with years of
experience, but where will can we find them? They are already working
abroad. All we have are blue collar workers that receives a very low salary.
Imagine receiving a 150 Php a day?

*Education/ Training*

-As of the moment accent training schools are also booming. This is because
call centers needs good English speakers. However, these schools are
concentrated only in the cities. We don't have such kind of training in the
provinces where majority of graduates come from.

-We have also training for blue collar like heavy machine operations but it
is also concentrated in the city.

-Executive developmental training are mostly given to the people who are
already in the position.

*National Policy*

-Government give microfinance in the form of loans but it is only granted to
the people connected to the loan officers. The real marginalized people who
have the best ideas are deprived from loan opportunities.

-Labor code is only for the people who have the capacity to pay a lawyer.
Common employees are not given the full benefit. Mostly, common employees
are denied of their claim.
