Here is a summary of the responses to the first round of questions. I would appreciate your feedback on the summary. Please let me know if you disagree with me, would like to add a comment, or change anything.

Round 1: The State of Youth Employment

Most answered that youth unemployment is a major issue in their countries. People answered that along with wasted potential, poverty, and despair, unemployment in some cases forced youth to illegitimate, “petty” work or crime. The Lack of employment opportunities also led youth to seek out the support of ‘corrupt leaders and politicians or leave their countries to find work.

Education/ Training

- The most common complaint was that they were forced to study unnecessary requirements, theory they do not use, to prepare for non-existent white collar jobs instead of teaching them skills, especially technical or adaptable ones to adequately prepare for employment.

- Most stated education did not give them knowledge on how to find or create employment, and that job openings demanded many years of experience, were so scarce they were kept secret, and given to people based on connections.

- A few training programs exist, but are not widespread. Many felt that there was not enough of a job market to absorb trained workers.

National Policy

- Many responses indicated that their countries had national programs to encourage youth employment, and that many of these had done some good. However, many felt the problem was not a lack of programs but a lack of awareness among youth of these programs coupled with a lack of successful, practical implementation of these programs

- A few people mentioned the possibilities of self-entrepreneurship versus the ‘look for a job’ mentality. However, many felt the capital required to be successful was hard to come by, or micro-credit loans required too many barriers to entry.
