Sujet: Re: [gyanemployment] Questions: Week 1

I am Richard Ondiek Adembesah , male, 21 years old and Kenyan citizen. Am
currently the Chairperson of Youth Environmental Alliance and one of its
founder members.
My experience with employment is that it is hard for most youths to access
well paying formal jobs.Employment firms set certain critaria for employment
that are not favourable to the youths e.g 10 yaers experience whereas youths
do not have such experiences.Youth end up doing odd jobs in big firms which
is contrary to their experience and expectations.
Most opportunities for jobs end to wrong and unqualified hands due to the
corrupt systems of employment.Jobs are based on 'technical know who' rather
than 'technical know how'.
Self employment is what most youths are engaging in right now but there are
challenges. It requires capital to get started and youths have to loan cash
from other sources to get going.Self employment has employed a number of
youths and I believe that if that sector is wellm supported, youths will be
empowered.

Overview
-Most interesting is the positive impact unemployment has made on the
youths. Most youths have turned out to face the challenge by become
entreprenuers. They have stareted and established their own small scale
businesses to try and meet their financial needs.
-Negatively, unemployment has led to youth involvement in crime (theft,
gambling, drug abuse /trafficking etc). The high cost of living has led to
some youths seeking for negative alternatives thus many have been killed or
arrested due to their participation in crime related activities.
Youths are left to less paying odd jobs or temporary jobs within
firms.Thejob market has been relactunt to tap young proffessionals due
to the
existing criteria/ conditions for employment. The ratio of unemployed youths
is increasing daily as many clear educatuion with hopes of being employed to
no avail.

Education
The education system is not that effective in preparing youths for
employment. It's only the tertairy level (colleges, polytechniques.
universities..) that in some way try to equip yuths with what is relevant
for employment.
The primary and secondary levels give one a chance to engage in odd jobs or
self employment due to no specialisation within this levels. Most youths have
reached this two levels due to high costs of universities, colleges,
polytechniques etc.
Most learning institutions( especialy goverment) are not well equiped to
technically prepare one for a job.The private institutions have turned out
to be productive with good performances but due to high school fess they are
unaffordable. The few that are well equiped and effecient can only be
accessed by the rich in the society.

Training
There are a number of institutions both government and public that are
giving programs to p[repare yout5hs for employment. This are universities,
polytechniqques, colleges e.t.c
IMost of these institutions are expensive to the youths .The programs in
most of them are theory based and a lot of empasis should be given to
practical work for exposure and experience.Training programs should focus on
specialisation than theory work.

Macroeconomic and National Policies
Thanks to the government for setting up a National Youth Fund. The
government of Kenya set up a youth fund to assist youth in the field of
entreprenuership. The challenge is that the funds also end up in wrong
hands. The government did not empasise on sensitising about this fund to all
levels. Atmost youths in urban areas benefited leaving behind most youths in
rural areas. The criteria set for funding was not that good.
The government should focus on trianing youths on Business Development
Services before giving out funds and even calling for
propasals.Marginalisedyouths who would actively engage in business
have been left out due to lack
of exposure.

The draft National Youth Poliucy is only a concept that is waiting for
denial from youths. This is due to not involving youths in policy
planning/drafting and even implementation.Kenya has good policy papers on
youth empowerment but the bigger problem comes with implemenation of this
policies.

Best regards,
RICHARD ONDIEK
