DEAR RACHEL,
I AM THOMAS A SARKO, AGE 35, LIBERIAN ,A SOPHOMORE STUDENT OF THE STELLA MARIS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE AND THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE LOFA YOUTH FOR PROGRESSIVE ACTION LOCATED IN LOFA COUNTY, LIBERIA.
BELOW ARE MY INPUTS REGARDING THE MAIL SENT ME RECENTLY;

-AT PRESENT YOUTH EMPLOYMENT IN LIBERIA IS VERY DISCOURAGING DUE TO MANY FACTORS' EDUCATION AND THE EFFECT OF THE 14 YEARS CIVIL WAR BEING MAJOR.

-THE EFFECTS OF UNEMPLOYMENT IN LIBERIA ARE NUMEROUS, BUT THE MOST DANGEROUS ONES ARE; POVERTY, HUNGER, POOR HEALTH CONDITION, SUB-STANDARD LIVING,PROSTITUTION, ARM ROBBERY AND OTHER CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES.

-THE SITUATION OF YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IN MY COUNTRY IS NOT ENCOURAGING BECAUSE, MANY YOUTHS ESPECIALLY THOSE EX-COMBATANTS ARE NOT WILLING TO UNDERGO TRAINING THAT ARE PROVIDED AT THE EXPENSE OF DONORS AND CENTRAL GOVERNMENT ,THE LACK OF MANY LONG TERM EMPLOYERS/COMPANIES AND THE LOW LEVEL OF EDUCATION.

EDUCATION;
-THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IS BEING PUT INTO PLACE TO PREPARE YOUTH FOR THE JOB ,BUT MANY YOUTHS FIND PLEASURE DOING PETTY BUSINESS RATHER THAN SCHOOL
-THE SKILLS TRAINING THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO EX-COMBATANTS ARE NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY BY THEM(EX-COMS)
-THE MONROVIA VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTER IS NOT PROVIDING THE TRAINING THAT IS REQUIRED DUE TO THE LACK OF QUALIFY TRAINERS AS COMPARE TO PRE WAR STATUS

SUCCESS;
-THER HAVE BEEN TREMENDOUS SUCCESSES ,BECAUSE SOME OF THE SERIOUS YOUTH WHO ACQUIRE EDUCATION ARE EMPLOYED BY BANKS, PRIVATE BUSINESSES, GOVERNMENT AND THE FEW COMPANIES THAT ARE AVAILABLE
-SOME HAVE ESTABLISH THEIR OWN BUSINESSES
-OTHERS HAVE BEEN GIVEN KEY POSITIONS IN GOVERNMENT

UNSUCCESSFUL;
-THE SYSTEM IS NOT YET WORKING SUCCESSFULLY DUE TO THE LACK OF TRAINED MAN POWER AS COMPARED TO PRE-WAR PERIOD
-THE UNWILLINGNESS OF MANY YOUTH TO ACCEPT THE STRAIGHT AND STANDARD SET FOR THE ACQUISITION OF QUALITY EDUCATION
-THE LACK OF LONG TERM EPLOYERS AFTER THE MANY YEARS OF CIVIL WAR

TRAINING;
-GOVERNMENT HAS TRIED TO NEGOTIATE WITH HER PARTNERS TO HELP REHABILITATE MANY OF THE TRAINING CENTERS SUCH AS, BOOKER WASHINGTON INSTITUTE(BWI),KAKATA RURAL TEACHER TRAINING INSTITUTE(KRTTI), MONROVIA VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTER(MVTC) AND OTHER TRAINING SPONSER BY USAID AND OTHERS.

SUCCESS;
-SOME OF THE YOUTH HAVE BEEN EMPLOYED BY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL NGOS, PRIVATE (few) INSTITUTIONS, GOVERNMENT AND OTHERS HAVE OPEN THEIR WORKSHOPS
-CONTRIBUTION TO NATIONAL ECONOMIC
-REDUCE THE DEPENDENCY SYNDROME
-IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THOSE EMPLOYED AND WITH BUSINESSES

UNSUCCESSFUL;
-THAT SOME ARE YET UNEMPLOYED DUE TO THE FACTS THAT THEY NEVER TOOK THE LESSONS SERIOUS ALTHOUGH WITH DIPLOMAS OR CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION OF STUDIES

MACROECONOMIC;
POLICIES PUT INTO PLACE TO PROMOTE EMPLOYMENT ARE FEW;
*THE REHABILITATION OF FEEDER ROADS, COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURES(SHORT TERM)
*THE PROVISION OF HAND TOOLS FOR FARMERS
*THE LOANAING OPPORTUNITY TO BUSINESS PEOPLE ,ALTHOUGH REQUIREMENTS NEEDED.

SUCCESS;
-ESTABLISHMENT OF PETTY BUSINESSES
-RESETTLEMENT OF RETURNEES WHO WORKED ON THE ROADS WITH
INCOME GENERATED

UNSUCCESSFUL
-NO LOAN TO THOSE WHO HAVE NO ASSETS TO CERTIFY LOAN POLICY

THANKS AND HOPE I WILL BE INVITED ONE DAY TO MAKE SOME PRESENTATION AT ONE OF THE CONFERENCES OF GLOBAL YOUTH NETWORK.
